Big Book of Knitting

THE Knitting Book for Me
At age 61, I have been "knitting" since I was in my teens and my aunt taught me. But frankly, I'm probably not the best knitter.I have had this book a long time, and I, too, thought it was too advanced for me -- until today. Then, something clicked while reading this book and looking at Buss's plentiful photos. And I have just completed my first "meaningful" knitting project. It was simple. It was just a hat, but it's a hat that fits ME! That I like, that I designed (simply) for myself, and actually, also for my neighbor who works in a nearby factory that has no heat in the shipping room.Things I never understood about knitting -- because my aunt lived in Oklahoma City and I lived out here in New Mexico -- suddenly were explained. It's like she's filling in the gaps of things I never knew... right down to how to make one of those big fluffy thick pom-poms!So I say, my E-Z (Elizabeth Zimmerman) knitting moment turned out to be a K-B (Katharine Buss) knitting moment while reading The Big Book of Knitting.I know I don't know everything yet, but the door has cracked open, and I'm on my way.I DON'T recommend this book for beginners (unless you're willing to hang onto this book for as long as 20 or more years... ) BUT it has helped me, and I'm very happy and excited and I know I'll never knit the same again! Thanks, Katharine!

I could only have this book, because it has everything I need.
Best book of knitting techniques. Very good pictures and very clear explanations. You will find all the basic techniques and special techniques to make anything from scratch. Perfect details, finishing, decorative details, practical tips, basic patterns like sweaters, socks, gloves and mitten ; and 67 stitch patterns.I love the book. It also talk about needles, tools and common kinds of yarns.

Advanced knitters only and can read charts
This book has some beautiful photographs of stitch patterns and lots of charts. There isn't enough, in my opinion, drawn or photographed instruction on how to work the stitches. I am more of a visual learner and need more than a chart and written instruction. I need to see the hands doing the stitches so I can copy them. There are a lot of Youtube.com videos about needlework now. Ahh yes to be old enough to have slowed down to watch them and young enough to still do the work. This book was a bit on the expensive side, however I will be adding it to my library because knitting is a renewed interest for me. I have been crocheting for years and decided I wanted to knit socks when I began having trouble finding socks to fit my extra large size feet. Womans socks are pretty, and pretty small, too.I have ordered 5 or 6 more books to see if I can find one that can teach me how to knit better so I can be proud of my projects. I am looking for a book that offers visual instruction, pattern adjusting and lots of projects for circular needles.I gave this 4 stars because it is a beautiful book to look at and I hope I understand it better someday soon. Good luck to all who find their way to the world of string.

A Great Knitting Reference.
I own many, many knitting books. I buy them for the pretty pictures as well as the content. I thought I was just getting another pretty book but NO. This book is an amazing educational tool. It is the clearest explanation that I have ever seen of some very tricky techniques. The pictures are clear as well. I was VERY pleasantly surprised that I could actually use the book for techniques I was unsure of such as the Kitchener cast on.The book is old but old is not a handicap for a craft such as knitting.

Excellent resource
I heard about this book on the Knitmore Girl's podcast, and on their recommendation looked it up. Boy am I glad I did! At first glance it looks like a pretty typical 'how to knit' book, but as you read past the first few pages you will find a wealth of information on finishing techniques and practical tricks of the trade. If you are serious about improving your knitting, this is a must have resource!

A must for knitters, from beginners to professionals!
If you own this book, you'll probably never have to seek counsel at a yarn shop again. Clear, pictorial, step-by-step directions for all the shaping, finishing, fixing, patterning, edging, facing, hemming, embellishing, casting on/off, increasing, decreasing techniques one could ever want are presented impeccably. The simple, secret tips that would have made your last piece look professional, that would have turned your last project into a finished garment instead of a bundle of front-back-plus-a-sleeve-and-a-half are all here. How I wish I had had this book before now. An amazingly compendious collection of intricate stitch patterns is included, but don't expect a gallery of sweaters to copy, that's not the purpose of this book.

Great Reference
I've knitted all my life but this book has been a great help. Whenever I want help I consult both this book and Vogue Knitting. I find that both books complement each other.

Wealth of information
At first glance, this book will seem intimidating as no new knitter expects knitting to be this vast in its intricacy. But if you are willing to go through the entire book, you will never fear knitting even the most difficult of patterns .For those who like knitting their own designs and patterns, this book is the destination. Its a complete course in knitting and I have not come across even a single new publication, except perhaps 'The knowledgable knitter' by Margaret Radcliffe that can rival its contents. Its an old jewel, has few copies available,so grab one if you can.

good reference book
A very good reference book about all knitting techniques with clear describing pictures. I learned how to knit and adjust a pair of gloves for myself through the book. I picked up easily the tubular cast-on and cast-off and all the good finishing techniques after nearly twenty years.
