The ac1200 in the name suggests it uses powerline networking to create an access point like my other netgear kit, but i can't find it in the manual.

The ac means WiFi radio standard 802.11ac and 1200 is the combined speed of both the 802.11bgn and 802.11ac channels. AC has nothing to do with alternating current and power line extenders. It does have a network cable connection that you can use to extend the network without using WiFi in both directions. That's faster than using WiFi both to an existing WiFi router and to your computer's.

I have had this connector a while now and am still not getting the coverage upstairs in the house, is there anything I can buy to add to help  ?

From what I could gather if you have two electrical circuits in a house it won't work on the second (i.e. one upstairs and one downstairs) or even if one of the plugs is on an extension spur so not fully part of the electrical circuit. I use this purely as an extension for my smart tv but for another old property with thick sandstone walls, two floor and six bedrooms I bought Netgear EX8000 Nighthawk which is a wireless range extender and has the advantage of only showing one router even though there are two. This seems to work well throughout the building.

Would this extend the signal from Devolo powerlines which work perfectly in all but one bedroom?
