A very expensive way to avoid chocolate
Food supplement pills that taste like chocolate? Before you start shouting GREAT and clicking the buy button, hang on. Firstly, these are the flavanols, the bits that many chocolate manufacturers take out of the chocolate-making process because customers find it too bitter. Secondly, these are thick-walled capsules for swallowing, so the taste is irrelevant anyway... But in principle, these are a way to get the concentrated health benefits of dark chocolate, without the sugar and fat content that you'd get if you just ate a big pile of chocolate.Importantly, a daily dose is meant to be three capsules, rather than one. You need three capsules to get to the 375mg you're supposed to take, meaning that a 90 capsule bottle is only a 30 days' supply- which makes this a very expensive supplement. These are large, plasticky, tasteless brown capsules that are swallowable. As somebody who sometimes struggles with capsule swallowing I will sometimes squeeze the capsule slightly with my teeth to make it go down easier, but these capsules are remarkably firm which makes that surprisingly difficult. Other than that they’re uneventful capsules with no aftertaste so there’s not that much to comment on.So, the health benefits of 375mg of cocoa flavanols? I wouldn't expect to notice any tangible personal effect over a 30-day course, but if I suddenly turn into Superman, or come out in an inexplicable rash, I will come back and update this review accordingly. In the meantime, I should state that I am not a scientist, but here's what the online research I did showed up. Please take it as the amateur research that it is.If you Google “cocoa flavanols” then the top four results are all either promotion for this product, or from the “Mars Center For Cocoa Health Science” which is run by Mars, the parent company who sell CocoaVia. Below that, the next set of results are, once you trace them back, also all based solely on the research funded by Mars, some of them advertisements masquerading as science articles. While that’s not necessarily sinister in its own right- maybe Mars are just ahead of the curve in health research- it’s worrying that you have to dig rather deeper to find any reporting that looks truly independent on it. Eventually you find references to studies (2013 Mogollon, 2015 Grassi, 2015 Hammer etc.) studying the apparent effect of these flavanols, and the impression I went away with, subjectively, was that more than half these studies did not demonstrate a health benefit; those that did were based on flavanol intake of 500mg and above. So in summary there's a definite shortfall in proof that cocoa flavanols are good for you. They're very probably not bad for you, but for a capsule that's as expensive as these, I would rather have been able to find broader and more conclusive support for the benefits- but maybe that's just me. I don't want to conclude by saying "this is snake oil!", but from where I'm sitting, it seems like there's a danger that might be true.If however you're dead set on getting the 'healthy bit' from dark chocolate without actually eating any chocolate (and where's the fun in that?), and if the price of the capsules is no object, then there's no problem, crack on. But until I see a bit more supporting evidence, I'm afraid I'm not convinced.

Rich in flavanols - antioxidants that soak up free radicals - and vegetarian friendly. Chocolate is good for you!
I have not been taking this for long, so have given it a cautious four stars. I am a great chocolate lover - and even my son pinched a capsule, on seeing the chocolate brown container. As my son is a vegetarian, he would not touch a typical vitamin capsule with a gelatin shell, so vegetarian friendly is good. What attracts me are the flavanols chocolate are well-known for - flavanols, or flavanoids, have antioxidant properties, which means they help sweep up free radicals - together with its feelgood factor. There's no caffeine in these capsules, but you can almost taste the chocolate. The parts of the cocoa bean here are usually those parts discarded, hence - the producer's argument goes - the need for this capsule form.Made by Mars, they certainly have access to large quantities of chocolate byproducts. The recommendation is three capsules a day with food, so a bottle of 90 will last 30 days.Other good sources of flavanols are grapes, dark berries and most fresh fruits. I have never understood why people buy powdered capsule forms of food, or blend them for their juices, which are then often diluted with water, or with added ingredients, such as preservatives and sweeteners, when they rarely have the benefits that the whole fruit has. For example, the part of the orange next to the peel has lots of nutritional benefits which are lost in a juice, and skins of fruit have great fibre value.Cocoa would be difficult to consume in its fresh form, so we can readily appreciate the benefit of putting the nutritional elements into capsule form.Rich in flavanols - antioxidants that soak up free radicals - and vegetarian friendly. Chocolate is good for you!

Aids blood flow, brain function.
Flavanols - as found in these tablets - are a type of flavonoid; they are found in many different vegetables and food matters, and aid in brain function and blood flow s will as having anti inflammatory and antioxidant properties. There are 30 days' supply in this pack. The tablets aren't the biggest, and are relatively easy to swallow as they have a plastic coating. The dose is three a day.I haven't noticed much effects yet.Edit 11-03-17: I've finished the bottle, and actually I haven't had any numbness in my arms or pounds and needles in my feet for a while now - I was reminded of this just now when I got that numbness in my little finger the first time since I had started taking these. So they do perhaps work (it may be psychosomatic) - not sure they are worth the asking price, though.
