A Testament to Freedom: The Essential Writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer

deep theology, tedious reading
Bonhoeffer's life is inspirational but his theology is challenging and tedious to read. Trinitarian to the core, he emphasizes the vicarious atonement of Christ and yet he is brilliant in his focus on obedience of the Christian Commandments, clearly teaching that there is no "faith without works."This is heavy reading, and annoying in the translator's insistence on gender-inclusive language - which never would have entered Bonhoeffer's mind. Still, if you're into traditional Christian theology this is an important book.

An Perfect Example Of A Modern Day Saint!
Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a man who exhibited all of the signs of a genuine Saint. He had a personnel relationship with Jesus Christ, and at the same time considered himself to be so unworthy of any honor that he received. This book is not something that you just pick up and read like a novel. Bonhoeffer makes one stop and think about the quality of one's life as far as it relates to God and how one's relationship with Jesus Christ stands at any given point in time. This is definitly deep and soulful reading not to be taken lightly..This reminds me quite a lot of Thomas Merton's writings..

Great collection of excerpts from Bonhoeffer's writings
I am really liking the wide variety of writings by Bonhoeffer that have been collected in this book. I was a bit disappointed to discover that many of the writings are just excerpts, but I am still pleased overall with all that I am getting to read by Dietrich.

Bonhoeffer
The book arrived promptly in great condition. The book itself is an amazing compilation of Bonhoeffer's works, correspondance, poetry, sermons, and excerpts from two dissertations. It is an amazing piece. Could be used as a devotional. Can pick up and start anywhere in the book. Highly recommend it.

Excellent Resource
This is an excellent resource for the contemporary committed Christian who wishes to be guided by one of the great Christianmartyrs of the 20th century. We need familiarity with Dietrich Bonhoeffer's writings to understand how he allowed his gospel-basedChristian practice to guide him to a serene surrender to brutal death in a nazi concentration camp April 1945, weeks before the camp was liberated by advancing allied troops. The life and death of this young Lutheran Minister (b.1906) exemplifies the clarity ofhis insight especially into Jesus's Sermon on the Mount. Dietrich Bonhoeffer is a true witness to lived Christianity.

Requested by my son a theologian so I can only go by what he said & as he quoted it in his next sermon I guess it went down well. Thrilled it arrived before Christmas as anticipated for after. Thank you
