great socks for field scientists
really niche experience here but if anyone else looking at these needs good hiking socks for scientific fieldwork in a hot environment, get these. spent a brief field season in central america wearing these out in wet, humid 90F / 32C weather under some keens and my feet stayed dry, cool, and most importantly stink-free. I know wearing wool in the heat sounds weird but it's definitely the way to go. I don't know how they hold up in the long-term but they withstood being hand-washed and hiked in for as long as they did with no frays. solid socks

The Perfect Winter Sock for Hiking, Walking, Or Just Lounging Around the House In
Summary:I went with these primarily because they are a Merrell product and Merrell tends to be a pretty well known brand when it comes to outdoor activities. I've owned a few pairs of Merrell hiking shoes and they've never disappointed me. I sort of feel like these socks are branded Merrell but quality tested under a 3rd party because honestly, they hardly feel any different than wearing your average Wal Mart tube socks made by Fruit of the Loom. They may look nice and have a pretty cool design but they are extremely thin and even after having felt around the entire sock I could not tell any difference between the heel, toe, or anywhere else for that matter.....the sock felt the same all around. Maybe there's some special material in this sock that does it justice when it comes to cold weather but I highly doubt it. They aren't particularly soft either. I've gotten a couple of generic Chinese brand hiking socks on here that feel way better and are much thicker when in comparison. I have to admit I haven't actually worn these outside in super cold temps yet but I'm pretty certain they are not going to provide the warmth I'm looking for given how thin and average they are. So looks like I'm going to have to go with another set of Chinese branded hiking socks. Not really worth the $17-$20 cost for a 4 pairs of these.Design: 6/10Functionality: 5/10Durability: 7/10Value: 5/10Update:I prematurely judged these socks. As I have used these now through a full winter I am happy to say they are pretty damn awesome. Not only are they warm and of high quality, even after multiple washes they hold their form quite well. I initially thought they were too thin but in reality although they are thinner, they still provide a lot of warmth. The are also extremely easy to slip on and off.I'm upping my review from 3 stars to 5 stars because honestly, after a few months of use I can't seem to find any faults with these socks.

Toes are nice and toasty
These socks are nice and thick! They do seem to pill a little bit which is disappointing. But overall they're very nice.

Comfy and warm winter socks from the outdoor footwear experts at Merrill
I've recently picked up several pairs of Merrill winter socks. To preface this, I know my winter socks and I'm extremely demanding. Here's my background: I grew up in Utah on the foothills of Salt Lake City. At my house, we received an average of 100 inches of snow a year which is four times the national average (28 Inches a year). I spent my free time skiing and snowboarding in the canyons surrounding Salt Lake City where they receive an *average* of 538 inches of snow per year. I love the mountains and snow and spend a good chunk of the year where I can enjoy both--Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Lake Tahoe. I have always been extremely picky about my winter socks. You really have to be--if not, you'll have wet cold feet all winter. Worst case scenario, you'll get frostbite. Bottom line--I know my winter socks.I've tried ordering some winter socks lately but there has been one recurring problem--many aren't long enough for any serious winter wear. This is a bigger problem with socks that bill themselves as 'boot socks'--I've tried ordering five pairs of boot socks in the past couple of months. Only one of the five were of sufficient length to actually function as boot socks. I've also ordered snowboard socks that have different issues. I ordered a pair a few weeks ago that claimed to be wool with spandex but seriously felt like kitchen plastic wrap. Not very comfortable. They were waterproof, but not very warm. The moral of this story: as much disdain as I have for 'brick & mortar' retail, socks are one thing you benefit from being able to feel and eyeball in person.Merrill knows outdoor gear and particularly outdoor footwear. I've had several pairs of their hiking boots and they've been excellent. I've got a couple pairs of their extremely burly 'heavyweight hiker cold weather wool socks' but these are not quite as hardcore. They're still really good socks--perfect length, comfortable, warm and well made. You get four socks here and that's a pretty solid deal. Highly recommended!

Warm, comfortable
I love these socks. I put on a pair on a cold day, turned on the air conditioning and sat at my desk with a hoodie, a book, and a hot cup of tea. Testing would now begin. My feet were in love. I sat there reading and drinking my cups of tea in a cold room and it was perfect. My feet just stayed warm the entire two hours I read. Now for the real test. It was 48F outside. I put on my biking shorts, a warm, but not heavy hoodie, my cycling gear and backpack and went for a ride. The shoes I wore are basically lightweight, flat running shoes, but are perfect for casually riding around town. When I managed to finally leave it was about 52F, but with the wind chill at speeds of 15-25mph it was much below that. My feet did get a bit chilly near the end of an hour long ride, but not cold enough to be uncomfortable and certainly not painful. The outside of the sock is only slightly coarse, but still soft to the skin. The inner part of the sock is the soft translation of a warm cloud converted to wool to lovingly protect my large feet. I haven't found any strands of thread that would get tangled up in my toes as I have found on other socks. Yes, I will definitely will definitely buy more. I am tough on socks so time will tell how well these hold up compared to my other, also loved socks.
