Q: Should the strings on the ukulele be thin thin fat thin

This is an old question but string C (2nd one from the top) is actually the thickest one in the most common setting with a high G. So looking from the top it should be thin (G) thick (C), thin (E), thin (A). You can get a low G string which will be thick and will give you well… a lower G but this is not a common setting and normally ukuleles come with a high G setting which is considered the standard and this is a thin string.

Q: Are these genuinely solid mahogany or are they laminate?

Laminate, poor sound & quality. Returned mine as soon as it was opened.
