The first book I've ever literally thrown in the garbage
I was forced to use this workbook for an English 101 course last year. Our last major assignment for that class was to write a technical report for the publishers on how to improve it for the next edition. Everyone in the class had a lot of criticism to share. I so badly wanted to turn in a report that was just one sentence. "Burn it and start over from scratch!" My teacher didn't approve of that approach. So here is a short, paraphrased summary of what I wrote. The book is divided in half with the first half a workbook for teaching research and writing skills and the second being a collection of articles divided into themes that are meant to be used as sources for students own research papers and a few student examples at the end.*The workbook is very poorly organized. It's hard to tell where one activity ends and another begins. Formatting and layout are not consistent.* The pages are a slick glossy magazine type which means they are impossible to write on. Pen smears and pencil doesn't show up and rips the paper.*The space to write answers in is almost non existent it's so small, and since the layout is so crappy and hard to follow, writing on a separate sheet of paper doesn't work either.*Organization of articles in the second half is just as terrible as the front. It's impossible to tell where one article ends and another begins.*THE INCLUDED ARTICLES ARE TERRIBLE! None of them are what would be considered scholarly. Some are only a few paragraphs long. Some are not even written work at all but actually documentary films that are no longer available. Some are purely personal opinion with no citations whatsoever. AND THIS IS WHAT THEY EXPECT COLLEGE STUDENTS TO USE TO LEARN HOW TO DO SCHOLARLY RESEARCH??* THE STUDENT EXAMPLES IN THE BACK ARE EVEN MORE TERRIBLE! These papers do not reflect college level work. They barely qualify as middle school level work. They read like they were written using a fill in the blank style worksheet. They are filled with problematic grammar and sentence structure.I'm currently taking English 201 "The Research Paper" with a different instructor and textbook. I feel like I'm way behind some of the other students because I'm having to learn for the first time much of what should have been covered in English 101. I got an A in that class and feel like I learned absolutely nothing useful. If you have a choice, please DO NOT choose this book! We should expect better from college textbooks.

Perfect book for class and beyond
I used this book for my English class, and I must say, the lessons you learn from this book can be used beyond the classroom. I've been able to write research papers using this book as a guide and reference. One of the best investments in my undergraduate career.

Helpful exercises, not so great readings
I have used this for an advanced community college ESOL class that focuses on writing a research paper. The first half the book has helpful exercises that require students to evaluate and revise thesis statements, evidence to support points, and so on. Unfortunately these exercises are tied to the readings in the second part of the book, which are not especially well chosen or well-written.The main reason I no longer use the book is that it teachers APA format while the the college-transfer English class that my students are preparing to take will require them to use MLA.

Too pricey for the product.
Okay book for what it is, but some of the sample articles in the second part are quite out of date. Yes, there's some relevance, but students could probably pull up equivalent articles from Google and be more current. Additionally, many of the sample articles aren't as scholarly as they could be--Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and other periodicals aren't going to get students ready for the real world. The worst part is the price. Nat Geo/Cengage should be ashamed of themselves.

Quality of product
I tried to write a review before, but they did not accept it. The seller of this book is not reliable in the matter of quality of products. I got a use, stain, and in very poor condition book as it was a brand new one.
