This is quite an extraordinary and important book, the product of quite literally decades of research and publication, which effectively establishes the illuminations in Renaissance manuscripts as an integral part of the Italian Renaissance, one of the very greatest periods in the history of art. The eminent author, Jonathan J. G. Alexander, who is among the very greatest students of medieval manuscript illumination working today, reminds us in his revealing title, and shows us throughout, that manuscript illuminations are in fact paintings, not on canvas, boards or walls, but in books, and deserve to be examined, valued and understood as such. THE PAINTED BOOK IN RENAISSANCE ITALY is an important and lasting contribution not only to the study of illuminated Italian manuscripts, but to the Italian Renaissance itself, and contains within it a vibrant new approach to the way illuminated manuscripts in general may be studied and understood.

Excellent survey. An absolute reference for specialists in the field and at the same time the text is accessible and a pleasure to read. Stunning illustrations. Excellent critical apparatus.Some points are less precise, especially those concerning manuscript sales/acquisitions after 2009. The author explains that this is the limit he set in order to finish the book (which is perfectly understandable). A list of bibliographic addenda for 2010-present makes up for it.
