Big Machines: The Story of Virginia Lee Burton

A magical book
Whether or not you're familiar with the classics MIKE MULLIGAN'S STEAM SHOVEL and THE LITTLE HOUSE (though if not, check them out!) you'll love this unique bio about their creator, author/illustrator Virginia Lee Burton, "Jinnee". Sherri Duskey Rinker, of bestseller GOODNIGHT GOODNIGHT CONSTRUCTION SITE fame, describes Jinnee as "magical" and it's an apt description for the entire book. The text is lyrical and lovely, offering insight without slowing down the story. And the illustrations by Caldecott-Honor winning author/illustrator of BLACKOUT, John Rocco, are gorgeous - referential but entirely his own. A wonderful classroom addition to discussions of author/illustrators, and women creators. Kids will love the big machines and the little house moving from city to country. The whole package is a stunner.

Lovely, repspectful biography
If you love Virgina Lee Burton's books you will love this short biography of her. I appreciate how the artist gently mirrored Burton's style and brought her life's story to us all. A great first biography for kids, and a sweet, short look for adults.
