Great stuff from the Rez...
How often do ya get to see mic booms crowding into a scene? Gotta have it! Lou Diamond Phillips is hot, but I've been a big Gary Farmer fan since Pow Wow Highway, also featuring the appearance of A Martinez (to show up later in the streaming version of Dark Wind).

Good little movie with some interesting technical quirks.
Nice little film with a good plot only marred by the appearance of studio microphones in at least a dozen scenes. Hard to imagine this sort of error would appear in a feature film, but there they were over and over again. Still, I liked the story so much I have forgiven the creators and really hope their sound men don't make that mistake again.

Great Story, Mediocre Acting, Poor Tech
To begin with, this is not the PBS series. If you are familiar with Skinwalkers and Coyote Waits from PBS, this is far inferior. While the story is outstanding, the acting is wooden. Lou Diamond Phillips is a good actor, but he just can't pull off Jim Chee. Perhaps I would have had a different opinion if I hadn't seen Adam Beach's outstanding performance as Jim Chee first. I won't even get in to Fred Ward as Joe Leaphorn. Suffice it to say that Dark Wind is a Jim Chee novel, so there is little of Joe Leaphorn to be screwed up.On the tech side, this is a really lousy DVD presentation. It is just a glorified VHS transfer. The sound is 2 channel, not 5.1. The presentation is full frame rather than widescreen, and there are plenty of funny intrusions from boom mikes and sun awnings.Nevertheless, as cheap as this is going for, I am glad I bought it. The story is fantastic. Really good mystery. Only two complaints about the writing. First, there are several totally unnecessary uses of the F-word, as if they were just trying to get an R rating. I don't mind if profanity is necessary to the story, but even the actors sound like they don't think the word fits their lines. Second, do we really have to hear EVERYTHING that goes on in Chee's head? I mean really, the near constant voice overs get rather irritating. If you want a really good adaptation of a Hillerman novel, try Skinwalkers or Coyote Waits. If you want a passable movie for a Saturday night, try this one.

Maybe doesn't compare to AMC's version
But I like Lou Diamond Phillips and it was fun to watch him in his earlier incarnation as an actor. Watching movies and TV series based on Hillerman's novels has made me want to start reading his books, which I am. If you liked this you can go find Navajo Mysteries that were done by PBS on YouTube. I think there's three of them or at least that's all I can find.

Not as good as the book.
It is incredible that you can see the mics in a couple of scenes. I had the same sensation when I saw Marlow (with Liam Neeson): How can they turn a good story into a boring one. To be fair, the plot tries to be as faithful to Tony Hillerman's book, but it didn't work. Now I know why Robert Reford decided to redo it with a whole different cast.

Underrated film
This film is be one of the most underrated films I have ever seen. The acting is superb and the strong story-line keeps you guessing all the way through. This is a film that stands watching again. Definitely a 5 star+ film.

Exceptional Navaho mystery and true to Tony Hillerman's books.
Very true to Hillerman's book and pacing. We found this film far better than the ones that followed which seemed to appeal to those who want more acton throughout. An excellent plot that was full of the secrets and the mysteries of the Navaho world. The director of the film allowed time for us to follow Jim Chee's amazing tracking in the desert and gave us a real sense of the Navaho traditions and the huge spaces of the environment in which they live. We were able to follow Jim Chee's slow and methodical way of sifting through the clues.
