These are two superb but criminally underrated films which I recommend to everyone whose senses haven't yet been blunted by overexposure to Hollywood pap. Kaurismaki's films shouldn't work- but in some wonderfully inexplicable way they do. Full of wit and pathos, with brilliantly delivered lines like, "The working class has no fatherland", they are proletarian fairy tales where the ending isn't always happy. Kaurismaki has managed to capture the contradictory and often fragmentary nature of the reality of working class existence (NB, existence, not life) under late capitalism and expressed it cinematically. In spite of their apparent dourness, (and "dourness" is a criticism often unfairly levelled at Kaurismaki's work) both the main characters in the films, Henri in "I hired a contract killer" and Iris in "The match factory girl" are desperately struggling to live. And it's through their struggle that you realize the beauty, but also the agonizing tragedy of existence. Both films have great soundtracks, and the opening sequences are unforgettable. And all of that without an iota of pretentiousness. It's been de riguer of late to flirt with "working class" themes and characters- the mind numbing "8 Mile" and the god awful banality of "Maid in Manhatten" spring to mind. But don't be misled. After watching Kati Outinen's excellent performance as Iris, it throws into stark relief what total patronising drivel Hollywood is churning out these days, and makes you wonder how they get away with it.

The thing that hits you in both films is the incredibly gloomy and dirty surroundings. Having lived both in London and Helsinki, I must confess I have rarely seen anything like the housing estates and flats in these films.However, the surroundings suit the films' themes perfectly; after all, the stories are hardly about shiny, happy people holding hands. The first one is about a man who is made redundant and decides to kill himself, and the second one about a lonely unhappy girl who sleeps with a disturbingly emotionless man.Although Kaurismäki's storylines are remarkably full of ideas in their simplicity, the small details and oneliners are worth mentioning. The harshness with which the hero of the first film is sacked and the lack of verbal communication by Iris's parents ar just two examples of Kaurismaki's eye for detail. Every single gesture and word is meaningful and has been carefully thought about by the director.All in all, these films should be regarded as masterpieces of black comedy.

'Henri boulanger' has just lost his job,feeling depressed he tries to commit suicide only both attempts fail so he hires a contract killer to do it for him.He then meets 'Margaret' who he falls in love with & then decides that he wants to live after all..!!Excellent quirky dark comedy,Jean pierre leaud is wonderfully deadpan as Henri & the stroyline flawless but I found the one fault with this film was the casting of Margi Clarke as Margaret- she is incredibly wooden & just wasn't right for the part!

Die eigenen Versuche, sich umzubringen führen zu nichts? Warum nicht einfach einen Auftragskiller auf sich selbst ansetzen? Blöd nur, wenn man gleich darauf die Frau seines Lebens kennenlernt...Aki Kaurismäki schafft es in seinem Film ohne viele Dialoge (und ohne großes Budget), den Zuschauer zu fesseln. Dies ist in erster Linie der tollen Story mit viel schwarzem Humor und geradliniger Handlung (mit vielen unvorhersehbaren Wendungen), aber auch den sehr guten Schauspielern zu verdanken.Für mich der beste Aki Kaurismäki Film überhaupt!

Henri Boulanger est français et vit dans les faubourgs de Londres. Il travaille dans une société qui compte être privatisée. Le directeur veut licencier en priorité les étrangers. Il convoque Henri, lui fait part de son renvoi et lui donne une montre en or (qui ne marche pas) en cadeau d'adieu. De toute façon Henri ne participait pas à la vie bureautique : il n'avait pas de contact avec les autres employés et faisait table à part pendant les repas. Il rentre donc dans son appartement minable, avec la ferme intention de se suicider. Il va acheter une corde (3 mètres), prépare sa pendaison et... se casse la figure, la corde autour du cou. Il essaye le gaz, mais... les ouvriers du gaz sont en grève...Suite à une annonce parue dans un journal, il se rend dans un bar louche (le "Honolulu Bar"!) perdu dans un quartier en pleine démolition pour engager un tueur afin de mettre fin à ses jours, puisqu'il n'a plus le courage de le faire lui-même. Silence radio quand il entre dans le bar. Il toise tout le monde et s'écrie "Chez nous, les endroits comme ça, on les mange au petit-déjeuner". L'ambiance mortelle est rompue et il peut discuter des conditions de sa propre mort. Manque de bol, il rencontre, aussitôt après le contrat conclu, une fraîche jeune femme qui vend des roses dans les bars. Il s'aperçoit alors qu'il n'a plus de raisons de mourir et il va désormais essayer d'échapper, avec sa tendre amie, au tueur à gage qui le poursuit.Tout le film baigne dans cet humour pince-sans-rire qui fait penser à Bertrand Blier, sans la vulgarité française. Immeubles délabrés, quartiers détruits, la fuite des amants est comme un gag perpétuel où Jean-Pierre Léaud ne perd jamais son sérieux (il ne sourit jamais) et où les situations varient au rythme des quiproquos et des contre-temps. C'est ainsi qu'Henri, qui voulait mourir et qui est toujours en cavale, se retrouve travailler dans un snack (tenu par Serge Reggiani) au milieu d'un cimetière...L'ambiance de ce film-presque-noir de 1990 est baigné d'une superbe musique, où l'on cotoie Billie Holiday, Joe Stummer (lui-même, avec sa guitare), Little Willie John, et le grand Carlos Gardel ("Mi Buenos Aires operido").Un bijou, en version originale anglaise, avec sous-titres français (en fait, il y a très peu de dialogues).

Man könnte meinen, es handele sich um einen trübsinnigen Film. Es ist aber aus meiner Sicht ein Film voller Hoffnung und Humor. Die Liebe zu einer Frau lässt den Protagonisten, einen sympathischen Durchschnittsmenschen, von seinem (Selbst-)mordplan abkommen. In einem kunstvoll inszenierten Bühnenbild sucht er nun nach seinem Killer. Jedes Detail ist stimmig und unterstützt diese kunstvolle Komödie. Perfekt!
