Great for my child
My four year old child loves everything ULTIMA HERO and enjoys learning new card games. It didn't take him long at all to catch on and dominate the game. Super fun to play as a family or one-on-one.

Dogs versus Cats in an Ultra-battle
The media could not be loaded. This is a cute, very giftable card game.At the beginning of play, each player is assigned a dog or a cat role.Hidden in the deck are four dogs and cats that you are trying to bring into play. The final one of these is called the Ultra-Hero. If you are a cat, you want four cat heroes, if a dog then four dog heroes. The game is encoded in the individual cards. Cards are coded so that some can be played only by dogs, some only by cats, and some by both. Each turn you will play cards and follow the instructions on the cards. There is a fair amount of luck in the game both in terms of what cards you get and are able to use, but also where the hidden dogs and cats are.The entire game takes between 15-30 minutes. This is not a high strategy game as the randomness prevents you from planning many moves in advance. The idea is fun, the illustrations are cute, and the game is inoffensive. This is a fun, giftable game for that dog or cat lover in your life.

Confusing mess, have to make up your own way to play
I really wanted to like this and have another game to add to my game closet for game night. While the cards seem well made and the art is cute the game instructions are horrible. They make no sense, they give no indication on how many, if any, card to deal, and if you try to figure them out and play the way they are written the game would never end. If the other team gets 1 of the 4 cards you need and decides to not play it the game wouldn’t end, effectively causing a stalemate if both teams get the other teams cards. If that isn’t the case then you don’t have any cards in your hand and you end up just flipping a card and playing it right away, taking out any logic, skill, or considerations to the game. Either way it is awful, and it isn’t explained either way in the rules. Good luck trying to find a fun way to play this game, as we spent over an hour trying to figure out how before having other family members who are avid gamers try as well and nobody has figured out a good option that would work.

Seems to be more luck based than skill based
The box is very nice and the included deck box is great to protect the cards. It seems strange that the box is then half empty when you use the deck box, like they are expecting to release expansion packs that would be able to fit in the box as well, but I haven't seen any yet. The artwork of the cards (and the box) looks really good, some a lot better than others but overall are good. The text in the rules and on some of the cards needs to be redone. Like on the Change card, "Exchange 2 card with 2 top deck card. Please your card in the middle of the deck." or the Wingo card, "Find any hero from deck and place in your hand, and do not take card after playing this card from deck. Shuffle the deck." Mostly plurals are missing that make it kind of confusing. The instructions are very similar in some parts. After playing a couple rounds, this seems to be very luck based. If you are able to get your hero cards before the other player(s), there isn't really anything they can do to come back except play the anti-hero or joker cards. If you just have bad luck, it is very hard to make a come back.Don't get me wrong, this is fun to play and I enjoyed it. There are just a lot of other games around the same price with more playability.

Worth Some Play, if Even Just for the Art
The media could not be loaded. The Ultima Hero gameplay isn't groundbreaking, but it's something. It's different, but in the same ballpark as card games like Go Fish or Uno. You can play with the (grand)kids or that the kids can play on their own. The art on the cards is also a vital part of the fun.The art is original, themed and well done. You likely won't mistake the cards for either Exploding Kittens or something from Steve Jackson Games, but it is cute. Maybe comparable to something from the Sunday funnies. Maybe even a little sharper and tighter than that.Check it out. It's worth a play, if you've got the time and want.

Beautiful game, fun play, but really poorly written instructions
With a family-friendly focus and the cat and dog themes, this seemed like it could be a fun game to try with the family. The box is really nice with a magnetic closure, there is a plastic card case inside to protect the playing cards, and the artwork on the cards is really nice. Visually, this is a beautiful game.I'll be blunt: the instruction card that comes with the game is a disaster. It needs a a complete rewrite and reorganization. A few of the cards also could use grammatical corrections to be more clear, as well. Paraphrasing, one says to take the top two cards from the deck and play this card. Did they mean "these" / both cards? A card? The first time we tried to play, it made my head hurt trying to make sense of the instructions, and I wasn't the only one. We set the game down in frustration. I later did some searching (no mention of it is in the instructions that I saw) and found a instructional video that was much better (though it didn't address where the instructions failed), so we tried again. Later games went fine. It's not that the game play is hard, it's just that on our first attempt I was frustrated that very basic information (how many cards each player gets) is mentioned in a few spots but is not shown consistently and isn't mentioned under the basic option. On our second attempt, it went much better. The game was fun, though I'm not sure it would be a first pick for game night.Overall, this game is beautiful from the packaging to the artwork and the cards feel nice and shuffle easily, but expect to go online to find more understandable instructions. The video is really nicely done, with a simulation of game play, but it would've been nice to have better printed instructions so I didn't have to search for it. I'd give it 3.5 to 4 stars.
