Jetsons: The Movie

Fun movie to revisit for the whole family
First things first: this was basically Hanna Barbera's swan song. I suspect they knew that this would either flop or do exceptionally well; it was a chance worth taking. Unfortunately, by the time the film made it to theaters, the MTV scenes had already aged quickly, as did the CGI, and Tiffany was losing popularity. That said, it's probably the most expensive endeavor the company ever took on and the people involved worked unbelievably difficult hours to make it happen; the voice actor for George himself passed away during the production. The end result, watching this in the current year, is a thing of beauty. Perhaps no other film accidently captures the transition of the '80s into the '90s with such detail and semi-grounded optimism. The music has aged with a certain grace which I believe both the younger generations and older generations can now all appreciate. The MTV-themed sequences are animated with unique, beautiful, heartfelt style which capture the way music videos used to look. The infrequent CGI has aged not so well, but it never really does and it was likely top of the line back when this was in production. The film serves as good entertainment, a history lesson of late '80s culture, and ends on a very optimistic note for the future. You want to be a better person by the end and work together to make the world a better place. Rolling the credits with a Jetsons theme written to the sound of Rodney O's "Everlasting Bass" sounds like it should be jarring, but it wraps everything up quite nicely. The disc itself is produced well and I found no issues with it. The colors look true to past releases as I remember, but the resolution is obviously improved and the sound was clear. It also includes a very good commentary audio bonus feature with the man who finished the voicing for George, which I found genuinely interesting. It goes without saying that I highly recommend this film to all animation enthusiasts.

Awesome movie. Definitely a classic!
Remembering when I first saw this movie when I was about 8 or 9 years old, I decided to pick it up here on amazon.com instant video. I will admit that I was astonished at the way I was able to digest the whole thing and appreciate it just as much, though in a different way, now being 27. What really struck me the most was how I was able to understand everything Mr. Spacely was saying about profits, seeing as how I now work at a leading financial services institution. That was stuff that just went over my head when I was a kid.But in all honesty, the plot of the movie is very well laid out, and to this day still stands as one of the best animated movies based on a classic cartoon series. People of any age can relate to and enjoy this movie, seeing as it focuses on the struggles of not only a promotion-hungry family man (George), but also that of every member of the "nuclear family," be it a young boy's enthusiasm in youth sports (Elroy), a teenage girl's dating/relationship drama (Judy), or the wife's overall concern with the well-being of everyone else in the family, along with wanting to get to know new neighbors (Jane). Also, I wanted to point out that this movie can be said to teach a lesson in business ethics. That is, when the characters realize that this "high-profit" method of sprocket manufacturing is actually causing harm to a hidden civilization (the Grungies), they realize that a compromise must be made so that all interested parties may benefit. If only such compromises could be made in the real world, I think society today would be much better in general.Anyways, this movie is a definite classic, and I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of classic cartoons in general. Buy it!

Great Movie, Poor Picture Quality DVD
This is a great movie for you and your children. I even remember seeing it in the theaters as a kid! It had been long time since I saw this movie so when I saw this DVD really cheap on Amazon I ordered it. The reason I took one star away and bothered to write this review is because of the poor quality DVD picture. Most older annimated DVD releases aren't usually this noticeable. The kids probably won't notice this but the main two complaints I have about the quality of this DVD are the dark coloring and snowy picture.Regarding the colors, the annimation looks shadowy and dark. I almost want to crank up the brightness on my SONY LCD TV. Usually standard DVD's look great on my TV with the upconverting but this one almost looks like the copy protection feature has been activated and is making the screen intentionally dark. The other problem is with the snowy picture. It looks as if they played a VHS copy and recorded that onto a DVD-R instead of going to the original tapes and re-mastering it for DVD. Seriously, it's that bad. Have you ever hooked your old VCR to your new LCD/Plazma/LED TV and tried to watch a VHS tape? It looks horrible right? That's comparable to how snowy this picture is.I hope this movie will be popular enough for a Blu-Ray release one day and it actually gets the re-master treatment it deserves instead of recording a blu-ray from a VHS Tape like this DVD release.
