Funny You Should Ask

For fans of The Idea of You?! But (thankfully) it has a HEA!
So this is one of the biggest things about this book. It has a happy ending, therefore it's indeed a romance rather than woman's fiction. And I say that because I love the Hollywood famous/nobody trope. It's my jam. But when they sell the book as ideal for readers and fans of The Idea of You I just MUST read it, devour it to be more exact. But all the way through I'm dreading the end...Anyways this was a good book. So why only 4 stars instead of 5? Because I'm stingy with my 5 stars (only for books that will stay with me long after I have put them down). Why won't this one? It was very very close to the 5 stars. But the end, albeit a happy one, made me feel cheated of the gory details that was just brushed past, as if never existed. The book goes back and forth between past and present plus articles talking about the famous hero or the heroines achievement as a writer. I enjoyed that until I got to 70% of the book and thought "Where's the big problem we must fix to get to the HEA?" then I started to think "can we hurry up a little, we won't have enough time to fix it and I want my HEA". Do you know when we've got to the problem that needs fixing? At around 95%of the book. Then the heroine deals with her doubts in one chapter and boom! The end (with another article to reassure us of their HEA) and absolutely zero fixing. I actually wanted to see the struggle with her career - the unavoidable backlash. Him helping her through it. Them growing stronger together, etc. Then the article to reassure us. Just a few more chapter really. Then it would have gotten the 5 stars from me.But none of that is to say that I didn't like the book or don't recommend. I highly recommend. This author will definitely join my favourite list.My complaint is that after writing amazingly flawed characters, making you fall in love with them and all their flaws and root for them. She skims past the biggest hurdle for their relationship and I felt cheated because I know she would have written it brilliantly - like the rest of the book. And bloody Jeremy! Could he be more jealous and insecure? I hope all creatives out there have the opposite of a Jeremy in their lives - because it's hard enough putting yourself out there and dealing with rejection and criticism and trolls. We don't need a Jeremy in our lives to add to our pain when being vulnerable and sharing with the world what we've created! We need distance between our art and the negativity of the world (so it first crush our spirit and we lose touch with our Muse).Ellisa is a great author who created a beautiful and imperfect world populated with flawed and rich characters (just like in real life). It actually makes you believe it could be real life! Might be someone's real life? Anyway, read it, devour it and enjoy it. A little heartburn *wink* but remember there's a HEA! *phew*

Cover was printed slightly misaligned
If you liked Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, you’ll most likely enjoy this book.My copy’s cover was printed slightly off centre, which is a shame as this is a romance book I wouldn’t be embarrassed to be seen reading in public.

A surprising gem
Unwilling to wait for a physical copy of the book, I bought audio book. The narrator is amazing, and her warm melodic voice makes the story so easy to sink into.I loved this story. I adore how the author moves between time and includes a variety of different interviews and quotes from reviews ect to add dimension for the story. The humour really took me by surprise, and at times was laughing aloud like a lunatic. This is a heart warming, funny and wonderfully melodramatic. A fantastic easy read/ listen. I enjoyed every minute of it, and cannot wait for further works from this author, who from the strength of this novel, will be an instant buy for me.

Brilliantly woven love story mixing time and genres
Ten years ago, journalist Chani Horowitz spent a weekend interviewing Hollywood heartthrob Gabe Parker, and the article she wrote arguably made both of their careers. Now, ten years on she's interviewing him for a second time and the stakes have never been higher. He's a recovering alcoholic trying to resurrect his career, and Chani is desperate to find closure on what happened between them a decade ago.Funny You Should Ask deftly weaves together past and present, truth and fiction, articles, blog posts, reviews and social media posts into a rich tapestry of a story that reveals itself slowly as we get to know Chani and Gabe. It examines commonly held beliefs that certain writing and subject matter is inferior to others, and the inherent misogyny underpinning women in the workplace. The self doubt that Channi experiences is all too real, and I was cheering her throughout the book as she grew into her confidence and slowly learned to value herself as she should.Funny You Should Ask is engaging and brilliantly crafted. It's a clever, modern love story and I adored it.
