A great reference work of ambitious scope
Recommended to me by an Egyptologist, specifically as they thought it was some of the best work by Professor Kemp, one of the authors. But it’s all good!It covers a vast swathe of time, from pre-dynastic Egypt to the Late Period (i.e. before it was ‘absorbed’ into the Graeco-Roman world.) One could argue that such ambitious scope doesn’t allow for sufficient detail. However, it doesn’t seek to supplant other literature but rather sit alongside it, dealing in a different way and with a different emphasis in order to describe a social history rather than simply a political one.I was fortunate to get a used, very good condition, copy from Better World Books for just $6. Fabulous value!
