The Gift of Story

Before reading, I thought that this book would be like seeing Mr. Schu present at literacy conferences, but as I began reading, it was not only that but so much more! (If you've seen him present, you know what I'm talking about, if not, imagine someone like Oprah during her annual gift giveaways but a passionate, lively, book-loving school librarian from Illinois.) This book is truly "the book of my heart," and it made me look deeper into myself as a reader in a way I have never done before. The reflections at the end of each chapter helped me understand myself and my students as readers and how I can bring the Gift of Story to each class. This book is for readers, teachers, librarians, principals, writers, and anyone with a story to share.

Reading this changed me, inspired me, and gave me lots of ideas about how to connect with kids during author presentations in the classroom. And it also helped me understand why story is so very powerful. It's a sensitive and insight-filled book that I will keep going back to whenever I need inspiration!

This book embodies everything I feel about the power of books. I made it more of a goal this year to work towards talking more about books and sharing what we all were reading and the difference was amazing! More kids left identifying as readers than ever before and this book is going to help me take it to the next step! Thank you Mr. Schu!
