Instabind cotton binding style mimics standard cotton binding. Available in 30 stock colors from our sisal color swatch card, it’s more durable than standard carpet binding and helps reinforce the carpet backing along the cut edges. Best of all the only tools needed to apply are a hot glue gun and carpet scissors. You can purchase Instabind in standard 54 or 216 ft rolls (priced by the roll) or custom size lengths with a $.40 per foot up-charge (priced by the foot). The diameter of this style of Instabind is approximately 3/8″ thick. Note: Rule of thumb for synthetic vs. natural fiber: if it’s a cotton or wool rug/carpet, use natural fiber binding or serging, i.e. cotton, if it’s a synthetic rug/carpet then synthetic binding or serging is appropriate (although cotton is still a higher quality look!).

Repair of unraveling hand knotted oriental rug
I have a hand knotted oriental rug that was unraveling. After doing some research on how to repair this rug I decided that the binding was not needed. I ordered this binding but returned it. I found that the best way to do it was to use this company’s ATT-150 latex seam sealer. It’s a latex glue that I spread along the edges all the way around where it was unraveling. The reason is that, in my opinion, this binding is best for carpets that have been cut and have rough edges. If you have a hand knotted oriental rug do not cut it or you will have a much bigger problem than what you started with. I think that the ATT-150 is all I need to stop it from unraveling. I bought their latex glue stick. I didn’t use them but I’m not returning them. I think that their latex glue sticks are the way to go because they will stay on when the rug is rolled up. The plain white ones probably crack and will not be able to do that. Using the ATT-150 also keeps the original look of the rug. A store that repairs oriental rugs wanted $700 to put a binding around it. I think I’ll tell that store to try the ATT-150. The binding would ruin the original look of the rug. The ATT-150 is not designed to be used like this but I think it will work.I uploaded two pictures. One shows the unraveling of the rug. The other shows the white glue along part of the edge on the left and the part that already dried to the right.

Great Stuff!
I love Instabind! I buy it whenever I need another area rug. I go to Lowe's and get a carpet piece, order Instabind, and save a bunch of money, and it looks great. My last area rug only cost $300. I'm a fan!
