Q: Why does the filter turn yellow after 1 week? Anyone else have this issue?

Mine doesn't do this unless I use tap water. I have found that distilled or filtered water let's the filter last a month or 2 without discoloration of the filter. My area had a lot of boil orders in effect at any given time so I have switched to bottled for both my cats and myself. If your filter is changing color that quickly chances are that it's the water you're using.

Q: How often should you change the sponge?

I change the sponge every other month and I change the filter once a month. We use tap water and have 3 cats and that’s a perfect cleaning time for us. I also do a weekly cleaning to keep it good but I don’t change the filters until those times

Q: do the squares go up or the flat part when inputting in fountain?

The square pads face up. The image with this seller's post is wrong. If you go directly to the Comsmart fountain listing, it shows the correct image and a video to put it all together, showing that the flat side should face down and the squares should be up.
