OKI'S MOVIE is comprised of 4 short inter-related films. Oki, a film student, is entangled in two relationships. One with a fellow student who pursues her and the other, her much older professor. Noted auteur Sang-soo Hong uses this simple premise to unleash his witty signature dialogue, exposing the hypocrasies and follies inherent in all of his trademark characters.

The best kept secret of cinema
In my opinion Hong Sang Soo is the best kept secret of cinema. You could say if you've seen one you've seen all in his catalogue but somehow you just never get enough. At least I don't, I've seen Oki's Movie twice now and I'm sure I'll go back again. Beautiful humanism is what comes first to mind. Simple characters with the common human flaws, everyday settings, repetitive motifs, drinking, eating, smoking... Don't expect suspense or a fast paced story, his movies are made to be felt. A true cinematic master.

Asian Crush DVD-R - DO NOT BUY!!!
I like Hong Sang-soo's work, so my low rating here should not be misconstrued as a criticism of his films. The quality of the dvd's from this company called "Asian Crush" are TERRIBLE! First problem: they're in the WRONG aspect ratio. They should be in widescreen, but they're in the (almost) square/full-frame ratio. Second problem: the subtitles are BURNED IN. This means that if you speak Korean and don't need the subs, you're stuck with them. Or if you want to employ the "zoom" option on your 16 X 9 tv to try and force the movie into the correct aspect ratio, you can't also move the subtitles up the way you can when they're optional. Third problem: there's something seriously wrong with the way they've been mastered. There's a frequent "hitching" effect in the motion which is incredibly annoying. Get real dvd's if you want to see Hong's films. These dvd-r's from Asian Crush are worthless.

Realistic story about a woman torn between an old and new love
Another HSS film. If you don't know what HSS stands for or who Hong Sang-soo is, I should warn you that this is another very typical movie of his style. For me, watching his films is like voyeurism: peaking into the lives of the characters as though you were an invisible silent character yourself. I get this feeling from the way that the actors keep their emotions very realistic and the way that the camera is (for the most part) never moved, rarely panned, and cuts only occur between scenes. His movies tend to focus on the real dialogue and interactions that people have and the situations that real people experience on a day-to-day experience. Because of this his movies may not be the most exciting, but I find they have a certain homeliness and familiarity, which I like.In this movie, we find the titular Oki making a movie about her life and the two men that have played the most significant role in it: her alcoholic classmate and her film professor. It is broken down into 4 parts and in each part, the story is told from a different character's perspective. I didn't especially like any of the characters, but I may be pre-disposed to not liking people in general, haha.Overall, I found this movie to be one of his better films with nice pacing and an interesting story to accompany it.

relevant filmmaker
Infuriating to read reviews of the film that are in fact product reviews, this ends up discounting the film before it's out of the gate, losing viewers who pass the film by based on the fact that it carries a two star review.
