Death of the Family: Death of the Family, The New 52

“…Have you ever heard of the “Flying Graysons?’”
Covering issues #13-18 of the Nightwing series, #17 of Batman and part of Young Romance #1, this TPB brings us into Nightwing’s tie-in with the Joker story going on in the Batman title. Grayson must deal with the deadly assassin Lady Shiva, overcome the maniacal, murderous plot of the Joker, and recover from a great loss in the family.Kyle Higgins is still writing the Nightwing series here (with Tom DeFalco doing the Shiva issues and Andres Guinaldo doing art) and it’s still just as good as it was. The Lady Shiva beginning arc worked really well and she made an interesting villain and it all played right into the Death of the Family plot seamlessly unlike the Court of Owls tie-in. The Joker’s attack had lasting effects and Batman #17 came right after issue #16 of Nightwing and the Young Romance bit followed. The Young Romance issue broke the dark, grim storyline that followed before it but it jumped right back up in Nightwing #17-18 dealing with a tragedy. Scott Snyder wrote the Batman issue with Greg Capullo doing art and, of course, it’s fantastic. Now, with Young Romance, that bit was written by Kyle Higgins again with art by Sanford Greene. The art seemed a bit cartoonish but the short story worked; it just didn’t work well with placement although they didn’t have a choice. The rest of the book has Eddy Barrows doing art until #17 where Juan Jose Ryp steps in. Now, compared to Eddy, I don’t like his art much at all. The faces look terrible at times. Otherwise, this is a good book to read but has no extras whatsoever so consider that in your purchase.

Joker is Back and Crazier Than Ever
Oh man, the Joker is at it again and he's come for Nightwing this time. Really gripping book all the way through, though I feel the last issue in this collection was slightly out of place, probably should have been moved to Volume 4 (which I haven't read yet) but there's some things in the last issue I didn't ereally expect that I must have missed the setup for in some other book in the Bat-verse. Aside from that, this book is near flawless.

good
I really enjoyed this story. It gets a little old that a good portion of the story is in all of the different titles. I like the joint story but it gets a bit old that the same several pages are in Batman, Batman & Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, The Teen Titans, Redhood & the Outlaws. It's still an excellent storyline.

As Raw as it gets
"The thing about Gothic..." is a text that you can find at the start of some stories like Nightwing Vol. 1, now, for the usual readers of the Bat Family comics, it means more, so much more, what Gothic brings. And it's the turn to Nightwing, nothing will be the same for this universe of characters, an epic closing to the Prince Clown Story, but a dark beggining to our former Bird wonder. Best deal you can get around this days.

Jokes On You!
Probably the highlight of the entire Nightwing New 52 run but by biggest complaint is when Nightwing isn't taking villains & characters from Batman's Rogue's Gallery & Gotham, the writers seem to struggle with truly engaging material. Also without reading Batman & other New 52 comics, you won't really get the entire story at times & may be a little confused.

Amazing, nightwing doesn't get as much credit as he ...
Amazing, nightwing doesn't get as much credit as he deserves. In the DC universe he should be rated at the top next to batman, his skill set is very close if not equal to that of batman. Fantastically written!!

Nightwing story ruined..
I actually felt really cheated out of where Nightwing's storyline was going. Slight Spoilers....I appreciated the cross-over event, really, but I hate that it put the story on pause for the sake of the main Batman series, and most importantly it just wantonly demolished everything the entirety of this series up to this point had worked up for. Literally all of it, ruined. Seemingly for nothing more than to make a good Batman story, which is very ironic considering how the character is all about stepping out of the Bat's shadow. So anyway, yeah I enjoyed the book well enough but I felt ripped off, story-wise..

50/50
I'm a big fan of Nightwing, he's my favorite. But the last two books had a totally different artist and the artist must not be able to draw people because it was terrible. It has an entire Batman comic in it, the one that is the grand finale of "Death in the Family" which I owned by already owning the Batman version of this. But it's nice of them to put it in here so we can complete Nightwing's arc.I didn't much understand why the last few books just aren't very good, but the first half of the book was amazing.

Wow what a Wingding
The first two volumes of the new 52 Nightwing where outstanding, as good or better then any new 52 title you could name, so the bar was set pretty high for this volume being the crossover with the larger Death of the Family ark running through the Bat family titles and this easily cleared that bar with a flourish.I won't go too far into the plot to avoid spoiler, Joker is back in Gotham a year after having his face cut off and disappearing, now he is back and he plans to attack the Bat family and Dick's new life at Halys circus is at threat, and all I'll say is it is brilliant, you get the whole build up and aftermath to the event (including the Batman titles where it's all tied up) and it is a wonderful character study of Dick Grayson and his place in the Bat family and also his attempts to juggle his personal life with being Nightwing. As before the art is fantastic, but the thing that really stands out is the writing and plot which twists and turns and is quite horrifying in places, you would expect no less from the Joker, I won't say more, all you need to know is that this stands alone you don't need to have read any other parts of the ark, although after reading this you might want to if you haven't already that is.This series is now consistently one of the best of the new 52, and this volume is for me the best part of the Death of the Family ark, I would highly recommend this to anyone.

Full of dark surprises
I found this volume on of the best of the Nightwing series to date. It's full of interesting and quirky writing and its artwork is great too (excluding a couple of 'different' styles near to the end, but that's my personal opinion). What stands out most from the volume though is the fact that you realise just how 'bad' The Joker can be. You may be surprised about a few other twists and turns each issue has too as the story of Nightwing and company unfolds, leading you to a final cliffhanger that makes you fully anticipated for the next arrival.I highly recommend this comic because it's a great read and will have you gripped almost at an instant.

Not a fan of Nightwing, has to be said
I am personally not a Nightwing fan so the 4 stars are not representative of my opinion of the product and not to mention that it wasn't for me either. Bought this for the GF who has developed a liking for DC Comics New 52 series. She isn't a super duper Nightwing fan but thinks the comics are quite good. Not a bad price either.
