I have owned the previous design for several years now and I am happy with the new changes
I am thrilled with Trudeau's redesign of this gravity battery powered pepper mill. I have owned the previous design for several years now and I am happy with the new changes. First, you can now load the peppercorns or salt crystals (I have one mill for each) from the top, which is a nice improvement from the old style where the product was loaed from the bottom. In the old style batteries were loaded on top of the peppercorns (or salt) chamber. The old style made me nervous because over time (especially the salt mill) batteries became corroded and the battery chamber was in direct contact with the salt chamber, I always wondered if the battery acid could leak into the mill proper. The new design separates the product chamber from the battery chamber with no chance of the product coming in contact with the batteries. The grind has gauges so I can pick the size I want the product grinded to. Overall I am very happy with the new design, although I miss the brushed stainless color option, it seemed to never look dirty and it had a nice feel. The new polished stainless option feels flimsy and I hope my butter fingers don't drop it because it looks like it might crack easily. The old style finish was very sturdy and practically indestructible, this new one does not have that feel. But like I said the redesign features out way the color finishes in the ways I described. It's the only battery gravity driven mill with such a good sized product chamber on the market, believe me I have looked hard to replace the ones I have and nothing compares. If you have never used this kind of mill, it's convenient because I use one hand to stir the pot and the other hand to tip the freshly ground salt or pepper, right into whatever I am cooking on the stove. Very convenient. I hope they improve the finish and it just might be the perfect cooking gadget out there.

What was supposed to be a beautiful pepper mill became the ugliest mess
Mine came with a HUGE sticker covering the entire back of the mill, so when I tried to peel it off, of course it didn't entirely so I had to use water and a sponge to try to get rid of the rest of the sticker and the glue stuck in it. No success. I can't use anything other than water, the item will get damaged. So a note to the factory: don't place a huge sticker on this thing. It's hard to peel it off and we can't wash it off. What was supposed to be a beautiful pepper mill became the ugliest mess. So for this reason, it's going back. Not even going to bother with it. As for the 3 stars, it's because the thing works as advertised.

Amazing grinder, but ruined by a bad battery compartment cover design.
This is such a great salt and pepper grinder, yet such a crappy design. The whole tilt and grind part is great, it really works well on both salt and pepper.BUT, The battery compartment cover is worthless. If you put the grinder down, the battery latch on the bottom touches the table. When you pick it up, the table will open the latch and out come the six batteries. This has about a 50% probability of happening every time you use the grinder. You can pretty much guarantee some of the batteries will end up on the floor. Can you imagine having to pick up things off the floor every other time you used it? I love eating dinner and handling batteries that have been rolling on the floor......ANDTo put the batteries in, you have to turn the grinder upside down. Every time you do this, the grinder starts grinding while you are putting the battery cover on. Pepper and Salt everywhere. On the table, on your lap, on the food you didn't want pepper on. This would be perfectly acceptable if it only happened each time I refilled it over the sink. The quality of this product is great. It is not a made-in-china product. Its the design engineering that failed completely. We have two of these and both have this issue.Do not buy one until they re-engineer the battery compartment cover.

Many Improvements Over Older Models!
A big improvement over the older models of the Graviti pepper mill, which these replaced. I really like the styling and the ability to easily see how much pepper (or salt) is in the reservoir. At first I thought the added light was a gimmick, but find it to be useful and a nice touch. My only complaint has to do with the height of the mill. It is too tall to easily fit inside the kitchen cabinet under the shelf. Yes, the shelf can be raised, but unpacking all the spices, moving the shelf brackets, reinstalling the shelf, and putting the spices back is not a fun job. Just a quarter of an inch shorter would have provided the mill easy in-and-out access with no problems at all. That is one reason for knocking off one star. The other reason will have to do with durability. I've had my mills since just before Christmas, 2017. We'll have to see how well they hold up over time. The older Graviti mills had some issues with durability. It is a great mill, with easy adjustments for fine to coarse grinding. I hope the durability is there, too!

This grinder works!
Love this grinder! I tried another but it didn't hold enough peppercorns, and didn't grind in a large enough amount. Plus, it fell apart (broke) when I was grinding peppercorns and I had peppercorns all over my steaks - total mess. What I love about this one? It holds a LOT of peppercorns and when I tilt it, it dispenses a good amount of peppercorns in a course grind! And I don't have to hold any buttons down to grind - I just tilt it and it works! The only negative is that it takes 6 AAA batteries, yep 6 of them! I'll see how long they last before needing to be replaced. But meantime - this grinder is definitely doing the job of saving my hands from a lot of pepper grinder turning!
