Good – bad – Good – bad – bad .........Cha cha cha
Twilight is a five film franchise (2008-2012) set in a world of feuding vampires and Werewolves who live under a shaky peace pact. When a vampire falls for a human, the inevitable trouble starts. Ongoing storylines are difficult to review without giving spoilers. If you want story plots then please check other reviews.Rated 12 these offer an alternative to the bulk of ‘horror’ or ‘Action’ type vampire movies.Encased by a stout outer box, the fold out inner sleeve holds five discs (one for each film) Features are generally sparse: typically, play, scene selection and director commentary. Later discs offer some additions such as extended scenes, audio set-up. Lacking graphic sex (although suggested) and no recallable swearing it does offer some animalistic type violence and graphic human violence with murderous and other adult themes. Last two discs are much more graphic.Disc 1: Twilight, Bella goes to live with her biological father after her mother goes on a road-trip. At her new school, she meets Edward, an aloof and stand-offish loner who shuns her, but Bella is strongly attracted to him. Almost 2 hour’s in length it flies by. ****. Some minor cringe moments stop top marks. Limited but good effects.Disc 2: Twilight New Moon -at almost 2 hours this felt it. The clichéd first hour could be easily cut to a fast pace 20-30 mins (lose a *). There are major errors as rules set in pt1 are totally over-ridden here (lose a *). Acting not so good and seem bored, Some good action and effects in 2nd half but not enough tension to save it. ***. Nikki Reed as Rosalie is woefully underused.Disc 3: Eclipse – Another 2hr film, this is far superior to New Moon and returns to the fast pace of the first and remembers the original rules and restraints lost in NM. The ‘other’ cast members have more on screen time and this is much better entertainment although there are a few icky moments. Just nudges into ***** and best effort so far.Disc 4 (Breaking Dawn pt1) Pretty much same criticisms as Disk 2, A strong final 45 minutes pulls back a * but this just limps into a grudging ****. Oh and Bella is revealed to be a masochist.Disk 5 (Breaking Dawn pt2) Bad start with more original rules thrown away (lose *). Undoubtedly the best story arc which has been brewing throughout, spoilt by the fact that a vision solves all the issues at the end, yet every film says the vision DO and CAN change. (lose *) Despite good story, scenery etc. , let down by too many contradictions. Even Edward admits he Never had any confidence in Bella’ abilities -so much for undying love. ***Unlike the Harry Potter franchise (which aged with its original audience and got darker with each film) this mainly remains locked on the younger target audience and fails to grow (especially 1-3). I can see the family cinema attraction but as home viewing it doesn’t fare so well and I’d imagine the books will be a far better read than the box set makes of viewing. Overall makes a middling ***. Decidedly average fare for the budget but worth a watch if you don’t have anything better to do.
