The Bye Bye Man [Blu-ray]

Not As Bad As They Say!
Well, The Bye Bye Man is yet another attempt at creating a new Boogeyman for today's audience. Let me tell you this; he ain't no Freddy, Jason, or Michael Myers. He comes across as a mash-up of Candyman and the Boogeyman (2002?). He's not scary at all. Just looks like a guy who lives on the streets with his horribly CGI'd dog.On the flipside, the movie is not as bad as they say. It's actually pretty interesting (the 1st time). It was obviously plagued with bad writing. However, I see what they were trying to do here. In more capable hands, this movie could have been something. Socks it won't get a sequel to fix the flaws.Overall, I'll give it 2 1/2 out of 5...

Im actually kind of bummed that I have to give this movie 3 stars, I had already read some reviews on it several weeks before watching it here so I knew it had some problems and wouldn't be perfect. Ofcourse, for most films, especially horror, I go into them with reviews in the back of my mind, be they good or bad, and see for myself. This movie is not horrible, as the vast majority of reviews will have you believe, is it good? mmmm, well that's debatable as well. Its certainly worth watching, I did find it entertaining. So... first heres a list of pros.Pros:1. Very fresh and original idea for a horror film2. the special effects of the monster is very well done. The Bye Bye Man and his hound3. Yes you heard that right his Hound, the BBM has this bad ass super creepy hound that's with him, which was a pleasant and creepy surprise for me. It was an element which really (I felt) added to the BBM.Cons:1. Like many horror films of recent memory the execution of it, just is lacking. Although I like that no character is safe, which is nice, it adds a lot of anxiety. The scenes just seem to fly along without much meaning, we meet a few minor characters that then spell it all out for our protagonists, and boom climax, end of story. These are some glaring pit falls to succumb to for a modern day horror film, and I have to say, whoever is at fault... You should know better by now...2. Ok acting, the main protagonist is a decent actor, and so it the actor playing BBM, even the CGI for the dog which many other reviewers said sucked, really was pretty damn good. But the actors which surround these people, whom are main characters... very wooden...Overall, I think that the content was poorly served, and poorly used, the BBM myth, and the BBM (actor/makeup) himself. really great ideas, especially sense the source material comes from a written source.... I really think this movie would be better served more so as an anthology style film, (such as VHS 1 & 2; and similar) a main protagonist somehow stumbles across the stories, in whatever form they are, of those whom have interacted and succumbed to the BBM, cue scene shift, we see those stories one by one, interjected with (obviously) the BBM coming more and more into our main protagonists life, and then bam, after last short story, main protagonist arch comes to its conclusion. I think this format would have served the concept and idea of the BBM far better, and would have kept with what is at the heart of BBM idea. Mystery. Its worth a watch though, its not crap.

Maybe underrated
I'm surprised this movie got so many poor reviews. It isn't perfect but it definitely wasn't a bad movie by any means. Some people are hardcore fans of a certain type of horror. They want a gore fest, constant jump scares or extreme suspense, and aren't satisfied with a film if they don't get it. Some people like me just want a decent scary story that strikes a good middle ground, doesn't use one of the above elements as a crutch, and hopefully has a decent story. If that's the kind of movie you prefer, then the Bye Bye Man fits the bill pretty well, and I would say that it's certainly worth watching.Details if you're interested:Is the acting bad? I didn't think so.Is the movie cheesy? Not really. The only part of it that came off as kind of cheesy to me was the name. We really get no explanation as to why this is the name used. It's not a movie about something that targets children, so it feels a little random. Are there plot holes? Not that I noticed, aside from the lack of backstory--we don't know where "The Bye Bye Man" ultimately came from. But personally, I get tired of all these horror movies where somebody always knows exactly how the supernatural bad guy came to be and the protagonist(s)/audience gets spoonfed this entire origin myth for it. We're talking about something that can only be stopped by not talking about it. It's more realistic for the characters not to have all the answers. Plus fear of the unknown yadda yadda.Do the characters act believably? Largely yes. One of the characters makes a dumb mistake, but otherwise acts pretty competently; another you just want to punch because he acts so bullheaded. People make mistakes in real life and a lot of them make poor choices. It doesn't have the never-ending chain of bad decisions, tripping over nothing, cars mysteriously not starting, etc. that a lot of horror movie plots rely on.

Good acting and direction.
I would ideally liked to have given three and a half for this movie which although it's a bit by the numbers and you can see most of the plotlines long before they are reached, isn't a bad movie at all. The story was interesting and the direction was very tight. The acting wasn't bad either and I thought UK actress Cressida Bonas gave a very good performance for a relative 'newby' to the game. I was really pleased to see both Carrie-Anne Moss AND Faye Dunaway, both of whom have retained their looks. I ignore the reviews of one or two lines that criticise but say nothing and compared to some of the trash from the likes of 'Kings of Horror' and 'Maverick', most of whose films have ONLY Negroid actors, the Bye, Bye Man is excellent!

Been done, another take on Candyman, Boogeyman, etc.
Another 'don't say his name' take, not what product description suggests at all... 'source of all Evil' doesn't come into it. That hype and Carrie-Ann Moss, plus less than £2, moved me to buy it. Will bin it. The 'Bye-Bye Man' is also totally underwhelming when he makes appearances.

It was bearable till the villain appeared then all credibility/scares went out the window. Rule one of horror club: make your villain memorable, this joker looked like he had browsed the Halloween masks section of a very cheap toy store. On a plus it was better plotted than The Last Jedi that's for sure. But then what isn't?
