Night of the Owls

I like Nightwiing
I got this series because I was reading Batgirl and Batman. I like the Nightwing, because he is part of this DC Comic world but he is not dark like Batman and Batgirl. He has an upbeat attitude and isn't so gloomy. The story line behind the night of the Owls is very well developed and I like how Nightwing plays into it. I don't want to give any spoilers if you aren't familiar with it. This is a great series to start with if you like the whole Gotham City part of DC. But get Volume 1 of the graphic novel first and then the second one, etc. It is worth reading. And if you are totally new (which I was when I started reading Batgirl), Nightwing is the original Robin, Dick Gracen, who went off on his own.

Dick Grayson at his best!
Being a Dick Grayson fanboy, the New 52 reboot really had me worried. New writers changing my favorite character, rewriting history of a hero that has grown so much over the decades, and altering such an iconic figure; I honestly expected to hate this change. However, reading vol 1 of Nightwing totally altered that preconceived notion. This second volume takes the story and pushes forward while still making way for new and old readers alike to learn the history of Grayson. Higgins, Borrows & Jose do a phenomenal job of telling the tale of this character's life and bring a level of emotion and connection that draw in the reader instantly. Nightwing vol 2 is a treat for new readers ~and~ fanboys!

A good while before reading that volume I read Batman
For Christmas, I received volume 1 of this series. A good while before reading that volume I read Batman: The Night of the Owls. That collected edition of The entire Night of the Owls story contains 2 of the issues that are in this Nightwing volume. Upon reading Night of the Owls, I wanted to know more about what happened to Nightwing/Dick Grayson leading up to that event. I've read plenty of comics with Dick Grayson in them before, but I'd never read a single issue of Nightwing until that Owls book. I like the character and have read plenty of Batman issues through the years that he was in. Some of those go all the way back to when he was still Robin. Others were Teen Titans issues with him. I had always seen him as either a sidekick or part of a group and was never interested enough to read some of his solo books. Night of the Owls changed that. That's why I asked for volume 1 of this series for Christmas and here it is the beginning of March and I've already bought volume 2.Writer Kyle Higgins has done an amazing job on this series getting me to love a character that I was merely indifferent about before. A lot of writers don't adapt well to having their comic being forced to crossover with others. Trying to make a crossover fit into a comic series is often akin to hammering a square peg into a round hole. I'm pretty sure that the main plot points about the Court of the Owls were laid out in meetings somewhere, but Higgins is the one that took the ball and ran with it. He not only made the Owls fit organically into the Nightwing series, he made them vital to Dick Grayson's history. The whole book is good, but the first two issues here, #8 & #9, are great. Higgins' writing gets 4.5 stars and makes me want to rush right out and pick up volume 3.Eddie Barrows returns as the main artist on the series. His work here is just as awesome as the in the previous volume. His art is defined by nice, clean lines and lots of detail. His settings look great, but in no way overshadow the characters. Nightwing looks cool, but it the normal people that stand out the most to me. Jim Gordon is one that comes to mind. Dick Grayson not in the Nightwing suit is the best drawn of all though. Not only do the people look good standing around, but he draws action very well. Barrows receives 4.5 stars for his art.Andres Guinaldo pencils an issue and a half. His art is nowhere near as good as what Barrows provided. I wouldn't even know who his Dick Grayson was if not for the context of the story and word bubbles. I've seen worse art in a few other New 52 titles, but this is the worst art of the series so far. 2.5 stars for Guinaldo's art. 4.16 ended up being the average score for the art.The art and writing scores ended up averaging out to 4.33 stars. For this site, I rounded that down to 4 stars. I'm loving this series so far and I'm really looking forward to volume 3. If you like Dick Grayson, pick this up.

Great
In the beginning of this volume, Nightwing is battling against a talon that has a close connection with him (trying not to give any spoilers in case you are just starting the story) during the Night of the Owls. After that night ends, Dick begins to work on a private project to improve a certain area in Gotham that has been decaying for a long time. He does not have enough money for the project on his own but does not want to as Bruce for help. So in order to get the money he needs for this, he has a meeting with a certain bank employee to apply for a loan which will put him in a very awkward spot.On the following night, Nightwing investigates why one of his escrima sticks was found at the scene of a murder. One detective believes that Nightwing is the murderer and begins pursuing him in order to arrest and unmask him. Luckily, Nightwing will find allies in unusual places that will aid him in their own ways so that he can find the true killer.

LOVED!
This comic series was probably one of the favorites that I've read. The story is great, the artwork is fantastic. I was entertained thru the entire series. I love stories that show the protagonist getting a good beating, but yet comes out alive, just to show that they aren't invincable, and aren't super human even though we already know that. This was a NY Best Seller for a reason. ♥♥♥♥♥♥

Worth it.
I love the books. They just got here 2 hours ago and I opened it up expecting a paperback the size of a regular comic book. This wasn't the case. It is bigger than your average comic book, which I guess makes up for it no being a regular comic book, and being paperback instead. It is in perfect condition and it looks like it was just printed. Definitely worth buying!

Great, but only within context
This comic basically has 3 separate parts. First is Nightwing's story from Night of the Owls, then it picks up the story from where it left off last volume, & then there's an extra Zero Year issue.Assuming you've read Batman: Night of the Owls, the first 2 issues are genuinely amazing, even if they're better read together with all the other Night of the Owls tie ins. The main story has some potential & is better than last time, but not too special. I'd give it like a solid 7/10. Finally the Zero Year issue is just pretty good.Overall I'd give the volume an 8/10, mostly because of how good the 2 Night of the Owls issues were.

Buen tomo
Un buen tomo que se enfoca en Nightwing con la Corte de los Búhos (Court of Owls) que ve más a fondo la relación que tienen estos dos entre sí.

One word, Brilliant.
This volume is easily the equal to the first in terms of quality and tone, it's actually difficult to add anything that hasn't been said about the first volume, so many new 52 series have been disappointing but Nightwing stands out as one of the best, Kyle Higgins has really nailed the essence of what makes Dick Grayson a great character in his own right. This collection contains three parts, the 2 part Night of the Owls crossover, the three part story concerning the academy of tomorrow and the zero issues which is the new 52 way of saying origin story, I won't go into too much detail of the plot but all three are high quality stories the zero issue especially does a very good job of showing how and why Dick choose to be who he is, and the important thing is that it was a choice giving him a firm grasp off his own potential early on does make sense especially how they have made a point of his independence in the story so far. After finding so much to like about the first collection I was worried that standards would slip but I was happy to have my fears dismissed, Dick Grayson if there is any justice in the world should stand alone as one of DC premier heroes, there is still the link to Batman but Dick going so far as to at one point break into the Batcave to do some research (leading to a very interesting conversation with another DC character) but he is very much his own man and a hero in his own right, great stuff and once again highly recommended.
