Simply Retro with Camille Roskelley: Fresh Quilts from Classic Blocks

This book has a bunch of simple but modern patterns. Love it!

There aren't many people who can do what Camille does - create something unique, imaginative and wholly original using simple, well-known traditional blocks.The eleven quilts in "Simply Retro" reflect a clean, fresh style that is both modern and classic, making the book appealing to quilters of every experience level and style. From a quick rundown explaining the many pre-cut fabric options available these days to tips on piecing some of the most common basic block units, Camille's writing style is engaging and informative. The "Quiltmaking Basics" cover all the important things, and the directions for each quilt are clear, concise and well-organized. If that weren't enough, some of her tips are pure genius - like her method for "accumulating" scrap-binding.There are two things that I think really set this book apart from most other quilt books. First, while there are some very scrappy "scrap quilts" in the book, several quilts are made with as few as three fabrics. One of my favorite quilts, Vintage, is made with twelve fat quarters and a background fabric. Given that selecting fabrics is one of the most daunting aspects of quilting for many people, Camille has created spectacular quilts that don't need 127 fabrics to be amazing.The second thing is the truly spectacular presentation. It's a pretty book - from the layout to the photography, it's a visually pretty book, the kind that you'll look at again and again just for the inspiration. The quilts are beautifully photographed - by Camille - in a way that reflects how we actually live with our quilts... or wish we did.If you liked Camille's first book, "Simplify", you're going to love this one. As good as that one was, this one is even better.

I buy a lot of quilting books, way more than I should. Until now I have shied away from getting these books in a kindle edition because they just don't work as well for me in that format. Today I decided to try reading one, this one specifically, Simply Retro, on the cloud reader to see if it was any better than on my little tablet. It was significantly better! Not perfect but much better and at a considerable savings over the print edition. Also, I can reference the tablet version when I am away from home without carrying all those books! I do not especially enjoy sitting at my big computer for long times but this worked well for me and I read the entire book in about an hour. This book has amazing patterns in it, they are an older style with a fresh look! I love them. She does a wonderful job with pictures and explanations. Would buy this again!

I absolutely LOVE this book! I already had her first book "Simplify with Camille Roskelley: Quilts for the modern home" and I adored it so I thought it would be a big test to see if the new book was as good - and it was!!! Her refreshingly simple style doesn't make her quilts basic but instead classic with a modern twist and a distinct Retro feel. Inspiring yet do-able!!! I already have one of the quilts "under way", her instructions are simple and precise and anyone from an absolute beginner to an experienced quilter would enjoy this book. This lives next to my chair, I browse it often. In fact I LOVE it so much I'm buying another copy to give to my niece who is a beginning quilter!! I would give this book my top recomendations!

I have always wanted to learn to quilt and I feel like this is a great book to start with. I love Camille Roskelley’s quilt designs and they seem simple enough to do. I am thinking of purchasing another one of her quilting books as well. Her instructions are clear and concise and pictures are also provided. Now, all I have to do is choose some fabric and get to work! Overall, I am happy with my purchase.

This is one of those books that if you are into a craft or subject, that it just makes you happy and inspired to look through. I have read through this all the way and flipped through it several times when inbetween projects to get motivated and/or inspired. The fabric combinations are beautiful, the patterns are clear and easy to follow, and the photography is great. It's a nice book on quilting to have in your library if you need some fresh ideas or inspiration.

I had been looking for patchwork quilt book for some time, but was unsure about purchasing one without looking through it. This book came highly recommend by Melanie Ham who has several tube videos on quilting.The book is amazing, there are several projects outlined clearly with suggestions on how to make and finish each project. I am already beginning one. Looks complicated, but instructions are clear.

I really like Camille and the quilts she makes and am vey happy indeed with this lovely book. She is very easy to follow and has lovely ideas and wonderful fabrics.

Camille Roskelly is the Queen of precision and simplicity. The only downside for me was that there is no pattern in the book for the Swoon quilt and you have to go and buy the pattern direct from her website or take a Crafty class, which is a shame as it adds cost to the project.

A good book. I liked some of the patterns but a little disappointed with one or two. Suitable for quilters of all abilities

I am a fan of Camille and retro, winner winner. A very good second book, I started on a project the day I received it.
