Best Zorro or best Diego?
Certainly One of the best Zorro movies, but is Power the best Zorro?Zorro hardly appears in this film. He displays no swordmanship, little of the fox and only one real getaway. In point of fact, this Zorro is nothing more than a common highwayman. Of course this is not Power's fault, but the fault of the script. So why the five stars? Because what little Power had to work with regarding Zorro, he more than made up for with Diego.Power may not be the best Zorro, but he IS the best classic Diego at his most foppishness. Eat your heart out, Fairbanks. Power displays a subtle sarcasm and wicked double entendre delivered with imbecilic cluelessness. Diego also does more, perhaps, then Zorro to rid the publeo of the Alcalde. After all, the big duel with the Captain is with Diego, NOT Zorro.Overall, a fun movie, not too long and not too shortπ. The big duel alone is worth the time.

Tyrone Power at his Best!
One of the best Zorro pictures and is up there with the Antonio Banderas Zorro. Power plays Don Diego who returns to California on the request of his father, who has resigned as head politician. He has been replaced by a very greedy figurehead who is propped up by Basil Rathbone. Powers slips into character as a rather foppish young man to fool everyone including his family. He meets a beautiful Linda Darnell who is the daughter of the man who replaced his father. Gale Sondergard is the wife of the head who would like nothing more than to go back to Spain with Powers. There is one of the best fencing matches with Rathbone that is a classic. The disc has 2 sides and I watched the colorized version, on the back is a black and white version. The theme song which is played when Zorro comes into play is one of the best musical scores and adds to the intensity of the movie. This is very highly recommended and very enjoyable. I would like to go back and discover other Tyrone Powers movies.

A Classic but...
I bought this film because it was compared to Adventures of Robin Hood. And I found a similarity. In The Mark of Zorro a corrupt mayor aided by Basil Rathbone, a man obsessed with the sword, tortures the poor people of Los Angeles (under Spanish control), robbing them of every "penny" they can take. Like Robin Hood, Zorro appears in a couple of occasions at night, to defend the Los Angeles villagers from the corrupt officials. This is where the similarities stop. The Zorro appears in the film, perhaps for about 15 to 20 minutes and we see the hero in very little action. In fact, this film is quite constrained in action. Most of the scenes took place in the corrupt mayor's office, a couple of scenes at Don Diego's house and at the church, one scene at the mayor's house, and two brief encounters with Lolita, in her room and in a chapel. It gives me the impression that the producers were avoiding an expensive production, so they chose a story that focused on the young Vega's charade to cover suspicions of being Zorro than on showing the masked hero in various adventures. This makes the second half of the film quite slow until Vega decides to confront Basil Rathbone. Although the pretty Linda Darnell plays Vega's romantic interest, her role is not up to her league. Her roles in a near future will prove that she is a great actress from this period. Thus, the film in general, lacks luster, excepting for the Zorro's appearances and an intense swashbuckling scene. However, in spite of these flaws, I still give the film 3.5 stars, moving from "it's OK" to "I like it." Why? The Zorro's horse spectacularly jumps from a bridge into a river below; the score produced by Alfred Newman is unforgettable; the actor playing the mayor does a splendid job in making him as ridiculous and clownish as possible; there was a good balance between drama and comedy; the intense swashbuckling scene between Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone (notice that Newman prefers not to use any music here to build tension because he probably considers it unnecessary), and the actors, specially Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone, were excellent in their rivalry. It's a pity that the legend was treated with such restrained action.Another plus is that the film has the black and white, and the colored versions on the same disc. Both versions are good although black and white is good enough for me.

Mark of Excellence!
Ah, "they don't make 'em like that anymore" takes on new meaning when watching this wonderful movie. The presence of Linda Darnell, alone, would make this a great addition to anyone's DVD collection. Tyrone Power is the heir to the roles of Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. and others who thrilled us with daring-do, swordfights, swinging from ropes, and fighting off impossible odds. This is the kind of movie I loved as a little boy, hunkered down in my seat in a darkened theater, gorging on pop corn and milk duds. My friends and I would come home to recreate Zorro and his enemies. Anyone could take Tyrone Power's role, but I always want to be Basil Rathbone, smirking and threatening Zorro with a flashing sword made from my mother's broom handle. There is one movie maker who has the same love and respect of these classic films, Steven Spielberg. His production of the same story, directed by Martin Campbell, comes brilliantly close.I can understand the attraction of "colorizing" old black and white movies, but I am thankful that this DVD has both versions.

A classic movie to watch
I grew up with this movie on the Family Classics channel in Chicago. We watched it every time in black and white, it was on. I ordered the colorized version which is wonderful. We also watched the back side of the disc: The narrative of the entire movie, plus the biography of Tyrone Power.

Best sword fight ever
I first saw this movie on the television back in the 1960's. Two things stood out in my memory: the music and that final sword fight between Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone. Until recently, it was considered the best sword fight on film. While Antonio Bandaras may have surpassed in the Mask of Zorro fighting with two swords, I still like this one with Power and Rathbone. I highly recommend viewing it in the original black and white. When I finally got to see it last year after not having watched it for several decades, it still retained all of the swashbuckling magic.

Hollywood swashbuckler at its best
Great caste, great action & photography. Tyrone Power has fabulous onscreen presence & Basil Rathbone is the quintessential villain - smooth & deadly. Dueling is real, fast & riveting. A step into a classic adventure I recommend.

Nice film - good hero, good villian, and pretty heroine. Old time Hollywood in its prime.
Love the character of Zorro. Good performances and you have color and black and white versions - very nice.
