Four Letters of Love: A Novel

A truly wonderful book in its extraordinary content which touches the beauty and tragedy of life's realities and the search for meaning and meaningful relationships. Things are not always as they seem. The outcomes are extraordinary in their magical/spiritual realism. The style is also intimately linked to the story-ies of the characters touching on the suprasensorial realities of perception and awareness; spare simple sentences, lyrical poetic painterly description alongside deep emotion and the way it is expressed or not. Mutism or silence - death or a fertile silence in which things can grow. I highly recommend this book of which I have already made gifts in the English and Italian versions as I start into another of Niall William's novels.

翻訳を何年か前に読み　いつか原書を・・・と思っていました。とにかく　翻訳が素晴らしくて　美しい言葉に頭の中に映像が浮かんできて　鮮烈な印象の本だったので　もう一度読み直したくなった今がチャンスと読み直しながら　原書を音読して　原語の世界観にも浸っています。だれか　映像にしてくれないかなぁ・・・・。アイルランドにも　厳しい自然の島嶼地方にも旅をしたくなります。

La fameuse histoire d'amour arrive vers la page 216 (ou un peu plus loin) dans un livre qui en contient... 250. un peu léger!!Comparer ce roman à un Tristan et Iseult moderne, c'est quand même un peu fort de roquefort! Je veux bien dans le sens où en effet l'amour de ces deux personnages, Nicholas et Isabel, est contrarié par une mère irlandaise traditionnelle.Le reste du livre nous conte les histoires de Isabel et Nicholas , mais aussi celles de leurs parents. Des groupes de chapitres consacrés à Nicholas, succèdent à ceux racontant la vie d'Isabel, et ainsi l'alternance se fait sur la majeure partie du roman. Pendant bien longtemps, je me suis demandé ce qu'étaient ces "4 lettres d'amour". J'ai même cru que c'en étaient d'autres!C'est certes fort bien écrit, mais l'histoire d'amour en question ne tient que sur une trentaine de pages, sans vraiment d'intensité dramatique, avec des comportements un peu caricaturaux (lui tombe littéralement malade d'amour, perd ses cheveux etc;). Les personnages sont pourtant bien campés, même si certains sont quand même trop monochromes à mon goût.

I ahd not read any of this authors work before but after reading Four Letter of Love I plan to read all of his books. The story and the writing was magical. Read it!
