Eight Dogs, or Hakkenden: Part One--An Ill-Considered Jest

Brilliant re-creation of the period
Hakkenden is one of the great novels of old Japan, and at last English speakers are able to read it. The translation is perfect and conveys all the bluster and verve of the time. Highly recommended!

Little treasures
like this are a godsend. The fact that such a specific and charming text as this is being translated makes me so thankful. I don't want to spoil the plot but it's well-worth reading, the translation manages to be readable and accurate without Waley flavour, and the classic woodblock ukiyoe illustrations are a wonderful addition. I strongly hope the remaining volumes are in production.
