Floating, Brilliant, Gone

Franny Choi is an amazing poet, and this collection is a great example. The first poem quite literally blows my mind away and my mind remains blown for the rest of the book. I won't say I loved every poem; there were a couple of only okay ones here and there. But there were no bad poems, and I highly recommend this book to poetry lovers.

I bought this book of poetry for myself as one of two 21st birthday gifts to myself (the other was lingerie). I'm honestly having a hard time deciding which I'm more in love with, which is saying something. This book debut by Choi is gorgeous, inspiring, intimate. She packs such a punch in so few words: "The work of love / becomes its own reason."I've been having a bit of writer's block with my own poetry but this book makes me want to write. I'm a huge fan of Choi's work and this is no exception.

I gasped, smiled, cringed so many times on so many pages. I kept saying out loud, “I cannot believe she’s letting me know this about her!” Unabashedly intimate and honest and powerful. I am so team Franny Choi and this book convinced me that I need to start reading and writing more poetry.

A fantastic poetry collection-- I found it fresh, relevant, poignant, truly moving. Very few young poets can capture the timeless themes that Franny successfully does in "Floating, Brilliant, Gone."

Fantastic

Franny Choi's Floating, Brilliant, Gone is one of the best poetry books I've read. It's an easy read with few extravagant or complicated words and yet the story she forms with everyday speech is amazing and tell very complicated tales. Many of the poems in Floating, Brilliant, Gone reflect Choi's experience in the U.S. as a woman, Asian-American, or both. The book's personal feel made me feel like I was taking a peek into Franny's diary entries (exceedingly well-written diary entries, mind you). I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a bit of poetry, and her live performances are even better! If none of this convinces you though, you should buy this book for Franny Choi's re-imagining of Lil Wayne's Pussy Monster which is equal parts of comedic genius and feminist critique.
