Hiroshima Mon Amour Paperback – February 10, 1994

I assumed that this had to be the book behind the film (as "The North China Lover" is the book behind the movie "The Lover"). I was looking forward to Duras' beautiful writing - I have spent quite a lot of time working in Vietnam and "The Lover" was very evocative. So the screenplay was not at all what I expected or wanted.I know, before ordering I should have enlarged the cover photo and deciphered the small print, so it's really all my fault. But I'm giving it a low rating so that other people may be warned and not make the same mistake that I did. Meanwhile my copy will be donated to the local library, where I am sure some MFA student will benefit from it.

I taught the text along with the film in an upper division college French course. It helped the students to make connections between historical events and the New Novel and Nouvelle Vague Cinema. I has also read this screenplay and seen the film as an undergraduate student some 30 years ago, and it was an important learning moment for me.

This movie from 1959 stars a beautiful woman who once aged became the key character in "Amour." Hiroshima has interested me for a long time and though this film was about love, it was also about Hiroshima."

Literarischen Weltruhm erlangte die französische Schriftstellerin Marguerite Duras (1914 – 1996) erst im Alter von 70 Jahren mit ihrer autobiografischen Erzählung „Der Liebhaber“ (1984). Die Autorin und Filmregisseurin schrieb auch Romane und Drehbücher. Im Jahre 1959 verfasste sie das Skript zu dem Film „Hiroshima mon amour“, dem ersten Spielfilm von Alain Resnais. Im Mittelpunkt der Geschichte steht eine französische Schauspielerin, die 1957 für Filmaufnahmen nach Hiroshima reist. Dort lernt sie einen japanischen Architekten kennen und lieben. Nach einer gemeinsamen Nacht erinnert sich die junge Frau an ihre erste große Liebe in ihrer Heimatstadt Nevers. Die Geschichte endete tragisch. Ihr damaliger Liebhaber war ein deutscher Besatzungssoldat und fand den Tod. Das Trauma belastet die Frau immer noch. Der Film, die Buchfassung erschien 1960, erzählt die Geschichte einer entwurzelten Französin in einer von der Atombombenexplosion traumatisierten Stadt. Marguerite Duras schreibt über Leere, Einsamkeit und Gewalt. Und über die Suche nach Liebe. Hiroshima ist überall.

...das es ein Drehbuch ist. A fragt B wie geht es C und D sagt das es E noch besuchen will. So schrieb meine Tochter mit 12 Jahren. Trotzdem klassischer Stoff und die bildlichen Vorstellungen haben nett was zu arbeiten...
