Works Great as a Microwave Oven - Using The Grill Requires Special Care
C2 with plate on top of grill works great! If you want to brown both top and bottom, you will need to stop halfway and turn the food over. If food is placed directly on grill, put a plate under the Grill to catch pan drippings. If you want to use it as a regular Microwave Oven, remove the Grill, and just use it normally.GRILLING MODESC2 is 36% Microwave with 64% GrillC1 is 55% Microwave with 45% GrillG1 is 100% GrillThe best slow cooked meats you have ever had can be made with the G1 mode. My favorite mode is C2 because it works remarkably well. This oven is not suitable for baking. That’s why I give it 4-stars instead of 5. It only grills and browns from the top, so it is not suitable for cookies or oven baked pizza, or any other kind of baking where heating is needed from the bottom. You can never put metal inside a Microwave oven. Doing so could destroy it. That’s a common mistake with Combo Ovens like this one. People tend to forget, and might accidentally leave the metal grill inside while selecting the microwave mode. That’s a big no-no that could destroy your oven. Metal is never allowed in regular microwave mode, only in Grill Mode and Combo Mode. That would be C2, C1, and G1, and only the grill that came with the oven.

Fire hazard!!
First let me say, I didn't buy my microwave on Amazon. I bought it at Walmart in August of 2011. A microwave/grill combo sounded cool and useful but I can honestly say I've never used the grill part. Ever. It worked fine as a microwave for a couple years, although the paint inside chipped very quickly. Probably a year ago it started sparking while in use. Which is scary! But it still microwaves fine so we just never leave it unattended. It's very hard to clean around the grilling mechanism. Food and oils collect in the crevices and eventually stuff starts falling from the "ceiling" of the microwave into your food. Sometimes, actual parts fall down. I found a chunk of the ceramic clip in my soup once! Just now, as I was trying to clean it again, the other ceramic clip broke off into my hand!! I finally decided to look up this model on the internet and I'm not at all surprised to find that others have had the sparking problem. I was unaware that they tend to turn on by themselves, though! These really need to be recalled! As soon as I get my tax refund, I'll be getting rid of this fire hazard!!

Design flaws - arcing and thermal sensor issue
I bought the m/w (microwave) new a couple of years ago and was surprised to see in the m/w cavity chrome plated screws (which attach the heat deflection tray and grill element to the cavity). I didn't think much about it until I started to m/w some food. It started arcing at those screws.Calling Emerson customer service was useless. The "work-around" is to buy "microwave-safe" touch-up paint, which is safe to use inside the microwave cavity to touch up paint chips, so that arcing doesn't occur. I applied 2 coats of the white paint to the top of the screws, allowing 12 hours drying time between coats. You will need to unplug (obviously) the m/w, remove the glass tray and apply with m/w upside down. If it arc's again, you missed a spot.Another issue is that eventually the m/w stopped working after using the grill. Emerson said it was the main fuse. I tested the fuse, it was fine. If the fuse was bad, nothing would go on. I found by doing some testing, that one of the thermal cutoff sensors was bad. Even though it failed, the m/w still lights up, turntable moves, fan runs, but the magnetron (device that heats the food) doesn't "engage" or start. The will be no "faulty" indication that the sensor is bad when using a digital meter (i.e. there is continuity). I was able to replace them and it works fine now. The only variable was that it worked fine until I used the grill. After replacing other suspected parts, the grill still didn't work. That's how I determined it was a thermal sensor.CAUTION: Unless you have electronics, electrical and repair experience, DON'T get involved with the interior workings of the m/w. Even after being unplugged, there is a risk of being exposed to 2,000 VOLTS. This is just one of the potential hazards. When in doubt, wait it out and take to a repair shop and have them replace the thermal cutoff sensors, or just buy a new m/w...preferably not Emerson.

the worst people
I recently purchased this microwave and boy was I angry. If I could rate lower then a single star to help get my point across I would. I received my item on time however I was shocked to see the item it's self. The function panel was busted off a tad. The inside was filthy. I can't believe this was allowed to sell.

Maybe they fixed the problem? Different model number. MWG9115SB
My son bought me this microwave yesterday to complete my newly redone kitchen. He did not buy it from Amazon, but I come here to read reviews no matter where we purchase the item. I think you can all imagine my dismay when I read so many negative reviews. Then I noticed that although mine looks identical to the one pictured, and is the same CU FT and wattage, the model number is not the same. I am hoping that means the problems posted here have been resolved. I used the grill function yesterday and loved it! Use the beverage function to reheat a cup of coffee this morning and WOW! HOT coffee :) My old microwave would take at least 2+ minutes to achieve what this one did in 55 seconds.
