Black Clover, Vol. 1

An interesting take on fantasy where everyone can use magic (almost!)
Black Clover is an interesting take on the fantasy genre where everyone can use magic, except our protagonist. It has a dynamic art-style, but is ultimately let down by it's forgettable characters. We begin by meeting Asta, a boy who is giving it his all to become the next "Wizard King" the strongest wizard there ever was! Unfortunately for him, he can't use magic - a fact that is further hammered in by his best friend (and rival) Yuno, who is the best mage that has been seen since the Wizard King. However when everyone is presented with their grimoires, Asta is also chosen - only he's been chosen by the anti-magic grimoire! He wields a sword which can repel and dispel magic, and is key to him achieving his goal.I enjoy the artwork most out of all of the aspects of the manga - the characters have dynamic poses and it is very action oriented. The style is reminiscent of the Haikyuu manga, and Asta could be mistaken for Hinata! Unfortunately this is another shortfall as Asta is a stereotypical manga protagonist - he is loud, fiery and never gives up. The interesting relationship however is between Asta and his friend/rival, as where usually this would be the other way around (begin as rivals and become friends) they both want to grow towards their goal of becoming the Wizard King which is an interesting change. The other characters similar in that they fall into tropes. The Black bulls are a group of unique misfits each with their own 'quirk', which doesn't really help them to stand out at all.The story sounds like it could be quite interesting - with the different magic users and groups there could be interesting interactions between them. The different magic styles are also nice to see, especially drawn in this cool style. Although with this being the first manga we are just setting the scene with Asta's ultimate goal. Perhaps in the next few manga we can see him progress more towards it. It looks like it might be a slow-burn from that perspective.I've read through this volume and volume 2 and mostly the characters are the same. Perhaps there will be more growth in later chapters, but so far they all seem quite flat. I would recommend this to fans of action and fantasy manga.

Great new fantasy shonen!!
Wanted to try this series as I like fantasy and magic and fairy tail just wasn't good. This is great it does feel like fairy tail and naruto but has enough of it's own charms and really enjoyed this first volume.

I never was a big fan of shows like Fairy Tail and have always preferred darker (Berserk)
Never heard of this manga before but I wanted to start a series that I'd never heard or seen anything about before so I went into it blindly.I never was a big fan of shows like Fairy Tail and have always preferred darker (Berserk), sci-fi stuff (Terra Formars) but I loved this.Definitely recommend this especially if you like magic stories, or even if you don't like me.Definitely gonna buy the second volume when it comes out.
