Q: Do the crates need to be coated or greased before using

I read they had been seasoned but I used my grandmas way with cast iron and greased them with bacon fat...Worked for me. I don't wash them to clean them every time just use a brush and burn the the debris off...I mean not a lot will survive several hundred degrees direct heat and fire.

Q: Do they have notch on the bottom?

Yes......they seem to be a positive fit for replacement of originals.

They are molded steel (tempered) and coated in cast iron.
