A comedy of discriminating taste and dirty little secrets. When a movie star and Hollywood diva Miranda Frayle break up, a playboy prince with a stiff upper lip sweeps her off her feet and boldly takes her home to meet his high-class, society-minded mother, who is none-too-pleased at the thought of having a "starlet" in the family. But when the former boyfriend hears about the wedding, he jumps back in the spotlight--and with the help of Miranda's meddling mother-in-law to be, he may just win her back.

Tons of Fun!
This one is just fun, full of excellent well known actors and some truly crazy fun moments. It is a bit campy, but on purpose, so tongue in cheek. Also, Colin Firth's grin/smirk through the whole thing may have been part of the acting, but I'm guessing it was also very natural due to the crazy antics. Personally I think he was just totally loving the role and the fun of the whole movie. It was truly a blast and my wife and I had a great hangout/date night, one that will include repeated viewings of this flick in the future for sure.Jim

British humor
I love this movie -- it's not going to win any Oscars, but it is entertaining, and all of the actors do a great job in their roles. It's funny, but neither sophomoric nor high brow. Julie Andrews is wonderful as always, as is Colin Firth, Edward Atterton and Stephen Fry. The actress who plays Moxie is an absolute riot! Although I don't care much for Jeanne Tripplehorn, she plays the part of a spoiled Hollywood starlet quite well. A surprisingly delightful film.

CHANGE OF PACE FOR COLIN FIRTH
To see Colin Firth as a blond and as a Noel Coward type character is certainly worth the price of this DVD. For a long time, I have thought that Colin is a splendid actor having first seen him in "Another Country" with Rupert Everett. However, I always viewed him as being a rather serious, dark, intense and rather gloomy type of actor(i.e, Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice). As usual those British actors/actresses can not be stereotyped! Anyone having the perception, as I did, that Colin Firth can only be serious is in for a huge suprise in "Relative Values". He is funny, charming and delightful as a character that resembles Noel Coward. He is so good that, at first, he is almost unrecognizable. There isn't even a hint of his "Mr. Darcy" side. It really is a nice change of pace for him and for his fans. The rest of the cast is also very enjoyable. Stephen Fry is a delight as a "Jeeves-type" character. Julie Andrews is also very enjoyable! For a light, forthy movie you can't go wrong with "Relative Values". If you are a fan of Colin Firth and think that he is soooooo serious, treat yourself to a nice surprise and see how versatile this superb actor is.

Wonderful Comedy, Early Colin Firth!
Grand old movie with Julie Andrews at her best. Colin Firth makes an early appearance here that lets us know why he rose to prominence! Sophie Thompson (Emma's sister!) is a scream as she plays a parlor maid posing as a rich aristocrat! and William Baldwin and Jeanne Tripplehorn round out a great cast! It is a fun comedy you will enjoy! The only negative is it is not close captioned!

So good I watch very time I need cheering up!
So good! I just saw the West End revival with Patricia Hodge and firstly the modifications to the script for the film are minor, secondly the stage cast were good but could not erase the memories of this really outstanding cast.Julie Andrews leads in every sense but Stephen Fry ( who is NOT a personal favourite) has to my mind never been better, Colin Firth offers great comedic timing but honestly this is ensemble acting at its pinnacle and the film is opened out just enough from its stage origins without really shifting the interior life of the plot. There are so many wonderful laughs in this and it SO Coward/of its time ( sensibly no attempt at up dating is made throughout the film - it is a period piece after all) and so aimed at a very specific audience that either you will tell me it's boring, slow and dated or agree with me it's magical perfection and bears watching time and time agin.In this reviewers view it's a tonic

Hilarious film. great acting, lovely storyline
Great, Great film! It's hilarious!!! No less. It's all the things you love about films wrapped up in a single film. Romance, Comedy, Drama, Action, and it will send you into hysterics!!My first thought when I watched this movie for the first time was of how similar it was to the writing style of Oscar Wilde. The storyline starts off deceptively simply and slowly builds in complexity ... it is virtually impossible to try and explain the plot because it simply has too many twists and turns. But for me, the real winner in this movie is Colin Firth's role as Peter, the ubiquitous nephew-in-residence. His lines are delivered beautifully, but it is his facial expressions and his smart-aleck remarks are tempered with just enough Britishness to keep them from being outright obnoxious. It's lovely to see him in a role that must have been so much fun. Colin Firth and Stephen Fry do buttoned-up British dignity to perfection and Edward Atterton's petulant rich brat attitude is also entertaining. On the whole, I thought the movie was marvelous. It's full of deliciously sketched characters, masterfully crafted dialogue, very effective camera work, beautiful costumes and props, and of course, ridiculous coincidences that serve to drive the plot towards its inevitable conclusion. A great movie to enjoy yourself and also to recommend to your mother or anyone else with discriminating taste.

Very British, indeed!
Sehenswert!
