Super new author.
This is my first book by Jonathan Moore, as he's a rather new author. And I will admit that this book is so very well written with flowing words and characters that come alive, that it is my favorite story so far this year. So I can give it a 4-1/2 easily. There is the aftermath of violence but it's just description of what happened. Gavin Cain is a young and brand new Inspector for the SFPD. Smart young man if I do say so. And he certainly has his hands full with his FBI partner, a female agent named Fischer. This story has a whole lot going on and moves with the speed of light it seems, and can well be read as a single story without any problem. Yet we are led to believe there may be one ahead of this and one coming in 2018 to finish a trilogy. The ending I found to be thoughtful. No cliff hanger type of ending here.

Gritty noir with excellent dialogue
Like The Night Market and The Poison Artist, this novel is not for the squeamish. What sets Moore apart is the utterly believable pacing of the dialogue—enough stammering, interruption, digression and thinking out loud to make the characters seem quite real. These books update the noir/crime/dystopia genre into a near-future love-hate version of San Francisco where it is nearly always raining, and corruption and loss shape the city. This atmosphere reaches its zenith in The Night Market, which I inadvertently read first, although it is the most futuristic. I will now read anything he writes. Warning: you will stay up late, so get some rest before you start.

One of the best thrillers I've read in a very long time
Pure dynamite. One of the best thrillers I've read in a very long time. Perfect plotting and characters. Plenty of surprises. Recommended 100%

Edge of Your Seat Reading
I have found a new favorite author!! Absolutely could not put this one aside and read way past my bedtime! Am on my second novel by Mr. Jonathan and am enjoying it as well. Don't want to spoil your reading, so will not go into the storyline; however, you can't go wrong if you like unusual, edge of your seat, murder mysteries.

Not a complete ending
I thought the ending was disappointing because not all the loose ends are tied up. It left me guessing. I also did not like the violence. So I will not be reading another book by this author. I think I will just start reading cozy mysteries from here on out.

Compelling
I liked the characters. Cain was tender and tough. The political angle, the history and the damaged daughter really made an interesting story
