Q: Would this work for storing butter on the counter?

The Zero Japan salt box may be good for on the counter butter storage. Here are some points to consider when deciding. The lid covers the top of the bowl but is not an airtight fit. If you use butter quickly, this may not be an issue. You should also consider the fit if you have any pest problems; such as ants. A standard stick of butter is about half an inch longer than the bowl. If you purchase half sticks of butter, they would fit nicely. Ultimately, the choice is yours.

Q: Could this be used as a butter dish?

Maybe, but it’s kind of an odd shape for it. Usually a butter dish has open sides to make it easy to get to. With this you’d have to open the lid and kind of dig in there. Plus it would be hard to clean without getting the wooden lid wet.

Q: How many ounces did it hold?

I could not say in ounces, but it hold at least 1.5 cups.

Q: What purpose, if any, does the slatted cover serve?

In my opinion it keeps your salt from getting contaminated. When not in use I like to keep my salt covered. The lid does stay open if one wants to make repeated visits to the cellar.
