Q: Are these thick enough to stand up on a tiered tray?

Yes, they are about 1/4 inch thick and well cut. I just stood one on edge to check; they are sturdy and solid.

Q: Will these wood blocks split or crack if penetrated by a nail or screw?

Depends on the thickness of the nail or screw. They would split pretty easily though. You want to drill a hole in the square just a bit smaller than your nail or screw, and be sure to countersink the screw head with a bigger drill bit (very carefully). The screw head could split the square in and of itself. I used wood glue to attach my squares to their base to avoid the risk of splitting. But with care, nailing or screwing could work fine.

Q: I'm looking for some that are 5 1/2 by 5 1/2 and 1/4 inch thick?

This panel is 5x5" exactly. Some of them were cut in a way that they are a little under than 5 inch. Other alternative would be to get pieces of thick balsa wood from Amazon and cut them into 5 1/2 x5 1/2 yourself. Then, you can mount each side of the square wood onto 1/4 inch square dowels (pre-cut to 5 1/2 lengthwise). you can get from Home Depot for really good price. I would use liquid nail or Weld Bond Glue to assemble them.
