Q: how does fish breathe with cover on?

First of all...fish don’t “breathe water through gills.” Fish species that don’t have lungs extract oxygen from water as it flows over their gills. The gills are very small, clumped, compact finger like structures, covered by a flexible bone called the operculum. When you see your fishes “gills move,” you are likely seeing the movement of the operculum as water flows over their gills, which are underneath. To answer your question...this tank is too small for any fish, and while they may be able to receive oxygen based on whether they have lungs, surface agitation via an added air stone, etc, your fish will not be able to properly “breathe” or live in this small bowl. If you have further questions about fish, or their gills, I implore you to do research on ANY living thing you plan to buy. You’re asking the right questions, so please, do some research and don’t buy this product.

Bettas breath air at the surface, not through the water like most fish. There are openings in the cover that allow air to circulate.

No. The tank is just a plastic bowl with a cover and light.
