update
I have been log splitting for many years and this is the toughest piece of kit I have come across. It`s first task was easy pine then tough larch and beech. Normally I would have stopped at the toughest pieces to save the older hickory shafts but this tool allowed me to finish off the toughest of logs. The head has not moved one jot. I would recommend taking off the collar as it is just a gimmick and interferes with the right hand movement. It very rarely jammed and was never difficult to remove when it did.If any of the designers read this.... the swell at the shaft handle end which stops it slipping through the hand should be slightly bigger and longer, when you have been using it for 4 hours you will find out why. Ist class and pays for it`self in 2hours.Update, Still solid as a rock.Brilliant! Jan 14

Works like a charm... once you get the hang of it
The other reviews are pretty much spot on.The product is well made and will probably last me for ever!the weight of the maul does take a litle getting used to when you have been using nothing ut saws and axes to chop stuff up. but once you get the hang of it, work on the technique and accuracy, the weight does the rest for you!If you think throwing 8lb about may make it difficult to get your swing accurate, consider a slightly lighter one, but you can't fault this productI'm going to enjoy making logs for the burner now! :)

Grrr... I chop wood
Bought this as I am able to get a lot of chopped, but not split, wood from work. This is excellent, the weight is enough that you don't need to put much effort in and it splits the wood easily. For the cost of a couple of bags of wood, I would recommend to anyone.

Not great.
I'm a fairly well seasoned maul-user, and wanted something larger than 6lb to split some big bits of hardwood. This seemed like a suitable choice.Problem one:Obviously with a maul this size, the idea is that the weight of the head is such that gravity will take care of the splitting, but such is the poorly designed, super-wide wedge-shape head that half the time it simply bounces off/out of the wood/cut.It's more like hitting a round with a sledge hammer!Problem two:The shaft split about a month into use. Light use at.I also have a cheapo 6lb Silverline maul and a fancy-pants Fiskars x27. Both mauls are far, far nicer to use in ANY size/type of wood than this maul.If you are absolutely determined to buy this maul, at least buy the hickory version, not this one.

Too heavy and "blunt"
I bought this axe as an alternative to a draper 6lb maul I've used before and have found it next to useless. At 8lbs its way too heavy for any length of use (I'm 15st, 6' 2" and fit) and I found it way to tiring to use for more than 3 minutes. I'd advise anyone to stick to no more than a 6lb maul. The angle of the head is much blunter than any other maul I've used and it simply bounced off the wood I was trying to cut, whilst another maul I borrowed worked OK. It feels like a Mark 1 "Neanderthal" design to be honest.

Heavy axe
The axe is rather heavy and the logs did not split very well. Good quality though and the axe should last for years.

Would give it more than 5 stars if i could!
I own log burning stoves and will often get free large tree logs (trunks) to reduce in size to fit stoves. I thought of spending slightly less on inferior mauls sold by Amazon but am very very glad i paid a little more for this one. Very well made and have chopped some trunks into c300 logs so far! I can't recommend this product highly enough - makes reducing the logs effortless (almost!). Definately made the right choice by following recommendations from previous customers for this product, over others on site. Great price also and is very well made. Trust me - once you've got your eye in on chopping the logs it can be quite addictive with this bit of kit! Definately recommend.

Splitting Maul
This product is a good strong item.I have used it for about two weeks and have found that once the timber is not too thick probarly about 8`inch or so it splits the timber fairly easily.I would recommend this item.
