We purchased a total of 3 of them, and just spaced them out amounting the dishes of food on three separate six-foot tables. The blades are basically shiney milar plastic strips that will rotate around and reflect the light in the area. I think the motion of them is enough to keep the flies away. It didn't seem to do anything for the small bees/yellow jackets that are attached to the fruit salads, but it did keep any flies away. We initially saw them at someone elses house and thought we'd give them a try, and they actually do work well for flies. Hope that helps. Dr. C
