Q: How long is the vertical post?

It's not very long. Only like 6"

Q: How do i get a long boom arm?

You can either get the DWSM912, which is a longer, 18" arm that goes inside the tubing. Or you can get the DWSM934, which is the larger version of this item. The only difference is the tube length is longer and the boom arm inside is also longer. I personally use both the DWSM934S and the DWSM934 on my set. All depends on what you're trying to do. Hope this helps.
