Q: Does this have any suction or a way to keep the base in place

No there are no suction cups, but the unit is weighted and balanced in such a way it is VERY stable. I use it with a 10 inch Samsung tablet and never have any issue with instability.

Q: Are the cradles deep enough to hold a phone with a thick protective cased?

Yes, the cradles measure 1/2 inches deep and they hold my iPhone with an OtterBox protective case securely.

Q: Can it be turned away to face a customer across from you?

Yes it can be turned 360 degrees.

Q: Is the base metal? I would like to use a magnet to keep it in place.

The manufacturer's description of the base says "Aluminum alloy" and I am not aware of any magnetic properties of non-ferrous noble metal alloys. Obviously, the other responders must know stuff about metallurgy and physics that I am ignorant of.
