I would guess that it should be OK for your partner to use unless he is a total imbecile. You do not specify his intellectual capacity, so perhaps it would be safer for you to stand by and mentor him on the first few occasions. Thereafter it should be OK. Otherwise, perhaps you should trade partner in for a more sophisticated model. ☺

It doesn't matter which wall socket you use when pairing the remote socket/plug. Therefore try pairing the socket with the remote in a different wall socket. You can then move the programmed remote socket to the wall socket of your choice and it should work correctly off the remote. If that doesn't work for you then I think you have a faulty unit. Hope this helps you.
