Fusing the spirit of punk rock with traditional Irish folk music, Shane MacGowan and The Pogues created a distinctive musical style and influenced such modern alternative heroes as Dropkick Murphys and the Real McKenzies. MacGowan's songwriting and distinctive vocals have created some great music, both in the studio and live. This fantastic double CD brings you the best of both The Pogues' worlds. Disc 1 features 22 classic singles and album tracks including 'Irish Rover' (with the Dubliners), 'A Pair of Brown Eyes', 'White City, 'London Girl', 'Fiesta', their unique rendition of Ewan MacColl's 'Dirty Old Town' and 'Fairytale of New York', which features the incomparable vocal talents of the late Kristy MacColl (Ewan's daughter!). Disc 2 showcases The Pogues live in concert, recorded at the legendary Brixton Academy in 2001. This second disc features an additional 22 blistering performances including 'Turkish Song of the Damned', 'Sally Maclennane', 'Young Ned of the Hill' and 'The Sickbed of Cuchulainn' among others. Two discs featuring 44 tracks in all. Warner.

Best of both worlds, a studio and live performance
If you are a fan or just curious about the Pogues musical style this is the ultimate album. It contains a studio and a live performance; the best of all worlds. Of course as good as the studio tracks are I tend toward the live CD as the energy of the Pogues really shows through.

Good collection, may have issues on computers
Overall I like the collection. Actually I pretty much love anything Pogues so I am biased there. This collection is good- my Pogues playlist (self compiled) has many different tracks but there is nothing wrong with this one really. My one and only complaint is that the discs seem to have some sort of copyright protection that does not let me burn to my computer. I have tried two computers and both reject the discs. Works fine in a traditional CD player though. Not a big deal as I have all the original Pogues discs. I would like to have the live disc burned onto my hard drive for archiving though... Bummer.

Just what the doctor (Martin?) ordered
Whether you liked them for their punk following or you just love great music, The Pogues deliver. This collection of remastered songs is just what I wanted, as I didn't want to go out and replace my entire collection of Pogues CDs, but found the fidelity of the older CDs to be lacking in good quality. Thanks to who ever put this collection together. I highly recommend it to lovers of folk, rock or punk and I fit into all three categories.

Pogues collection truly ultimate
This CD is almost too outstanding for words. The Pogues Ultimate Collection features recorded music on CD 1 and a live performance on CD 2. Both are superb examples of Irish punk music, ranging from beautiful ballads that bring a tear to the eye to robust foot-stompers that keep the listener moving. The phrase "I laughed, I cried" is a cliche in reviews but it is my true reaction to this excellent CD set. I was motivated to buy it by the use of "If I should Fall from Grace with God" in the Hundayi Sonata commercial with the little kids playing hockey. The refrain "Let me go, boys" was so catchy, I looked up the music and took a chance that I would like the other songs on the CD. All of the music far exceeded my expectations.

Ultimate Collection Disc 3?
A great collection here. I already have all the disc 1 tracks on other Pogues CDs, but this collection was still worth it if only for the live CD. But having so many of their great studio recordings in one place on disc 1 is pretty convenient. I do have to agree with a previous review that the studio tracks on disc 1 are not really perfect sound quality. The same tracks on the remastered studio albums sound slightly brighter and better listened to side-by-side.Of course, The Pogues had enough great songs that this collection could have had another CD of their studio stuff. So I recorded my own Ultimate Collection Disc 3 CD from tracks I have on their remastered, extended studio CDs. This combined with the collection disc 1 & 2 mean I rarely feel the need to dig out their other CDs. Here's the studio tracks I included on my "Ultimate Collection Disc 3":Auld TriangleBand Played Waltzing Matilda, The [long version]Bottle Of SmokeBroad Majestic Shannon, TheDanny BoyDark Streets of LondonDown All The DaysI'm A Man You Don't Meet Every DayJohnny Come Lately [Steve Earle]LoreleiLullaby Of LondonNavigatorOld Main Drag, TheParting Glass, TheRain StreetRecruiting Sergeant, Rocky Road To Dublin, Galway RacesSea ShantyStar Of The County DownStreets Of Sorrow, Birmingham SixTurkish Song Of The DamnedWhiskey in the JarWild Rover, The

A Complete Introduction to an Important Band
I bought this CD to get an introduction to the music of the Pogues. I play Irish music, and often get requests from people for something they heard from the Pogues. This collection has two disks, one studio, and one live, so it gives you a good feel for both aspects of the band. It is immediately apparent why so many folks remember their music and performances fondly. Their music is brash, powerful, energetic and loud. They did a lot of new material, and approached older tunes with enthusiasm and conviction, an approach that brings new life to those old chestnuts. You can hear the fact that Shane MacGowan was a heavy drinker in the live performance, but while slurred, his singing is still strong and powerful. While the music is more rock-oriented than I normally listen to, I am glad I bought the CD--I can see why this band is considered pivotal in the recent history of Irish music.
