Kodaly in the First Grade Classroom: Developing the Creative Brain in the 21st Century

The best part is that each book contains a year worth ...
If you teach elementary music and want to do so effectively, you should probably purchase this entire series right away. It's incredible! The best part is that each book contains a year worth of units divided into sequential lessons and with specific repertoire (though there is plenty of flexibility if you want to use other repertoire for some parts of lessons). Even if your kids aren't caught up to the sequence (my 5th graders are currently on 2nd grade concepts), the lessons work and are adaptable to your students, your equipment, your classroom, your administration, and your overall situation. These books are an amazing resource for elementary music teacher and something that the elementary music world has been lacking for much too long. The lessons can also serve as an outline that can be supplemented with other activities (concert prep, Orff activities, instrumental performance, etc).

Excellent Resource
This is what I wish I'd gotten out of two college degrees! Absolutely wonderful Kodaly resource, especially for those who are interested in the method but unable to take Level's courses. Packed with history, process, research, songs and chants, curriculum charts, resources of all varieties, and actual LESSON PLANS. What I most appreciate is the breaking down of the how and why - I finally feel like I have my bearings when it comes to planning out the year and deciding a sequential way to introduce concepts to the kids. I purchased all grade levels and couldn't be happier with the practical knowledge I've gleaned.

Reasonably Priced
I initially bought the Kindergarten and 1st grade text books for the Kodaly Level I class held at Texas State San Marcos in July 2019. I ended up buying the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th textbooks during the class as they are well written, reasonably priced and a great reference for any music educator. I will be using all the books in the upcoming school year(s). Even if you haven’t taken a Kodaly class, this book and the other five books are a great resource.

Invaluable step by step lesson plans
This has been an invaluable tool in my first year teaching. The step by step scripted presentation of key elements is so helpful! I am so thankful for the structure and guidance this has provided me. I'd recommend reading the authors' book Kodaly Today to understand more of the Kodaly concept. The Kindergarten book includes the music and instructions to many of the songs and games referenced here.

Great series of resources
I have enjoyed learning how to teach each unit from these books. I am always referencing the materials and growing in my knowledge, teaching, and musicianship through learning and practicing these techniques.
