Harley Quinn's Shocking Surprise (Batman) Paperback – October 1, 2013

A book for the reluctant reader. Middle of the road book. Not too long, not ridiculously short. Not a graphic novel yet is has a few pictures. Does have an AR quiz and a glossary of the more difficult words in the back. This happy mom would buy again!

This is a chapter book with Harley and the Joker as the villains (the best villains!). There are several full-page, full-color pictures in the Batman Animated Series style. At the end, there are discussion questions and writing prompts for keeping young readers engaged.

I remember borrowing it from the Normal library.One page was shocking to me.It was the one with Robin knocked out. Eeeep, did I just say that?

Harley Quinn, accomplice and on/off girlfriend of Batman's arch nemesis, the Joker, has snatched Robin and has him suspended over a tank of killer fish. Will the Dark Knight save the Boy Wonder in time?Many hardcore Bat-fans, especially those over 25, will probably find this short story reminds them of the 1993 animated Batman series episode "The Laughing Fish" where the plot is rather similar, but anyone who reads it, irrespective of age, gender and experience of the animated series, will get a good chuckle.These books are, of course, intended for children, and they're highly suitable for them, as there's no explicit violence or strong language, no sexual innuendo and no serious adult themes. What's really good though is that the books have an educational quality. After the story there's a few pages with questions for the reader, asking things like what would the reader do in Batman's place or whether they thought Harley was right or wrong to do what she did. These would be very good for reading study in a classroom environment.The story is short, simple and to the point and has a few fun childish jokes and some good serious points, and it brings the naughty but loveable character of Harley Quinn to a fresh generation of Bat-fans. 10/10.
