Q: Where do the batteries go?

In the rear of the unit. The included written instructions tell you to turn the rear in a circular motion (either clockwise or counter-clockwise...I am not recalling which one). Nope--you have to ignore the instructions. The actual way to remove the rear lid is much more simple. Just slide it to the side, like you have done with hundreds of other electronic devices. This sliding part does not detach from the unit--so you can't lose it. Slide to the side, insert the batteries, then slide the rear part back until you hear/see it click into place. (And, as I've posted elsewhere, also ignore the instructions telling you to install the batteries facing the same direction. Make sure the two are facing in opposite directions, as is common with other battery-powered devices.)
