Q: Is the 18" width (the smallest it will go) measured from "inside to inside" or "outside to outside" of the rails? My toilet space is very small.

I believe so. We have these in two homes. The one, the bars are set at approx. 22". The bathroom at our 2nd location is VERY small, so I am sure I have the bars set narrower than the 22". (Not there to measure it for you.) Any smaller than 18" and you would barely have any clearance around the commode.

Q: Does this work on hospital bed?

It is only a frame designed for attaching to a toilet seat. i can't imagine how it could be used in conjunction with a hospital bed. I think you need to be looking at a commode.

Q: What is the max and min vertical height of the handles (floor to top of handles)? Product description does not specify and this is important.

I have the verticals set in the center hole (of 5 holes which are 1" apart) and that center hole is 11.5" from the floor. With that setting the cross handles are 28-1/4" from the floor, so by my calculations, the most you could raise it would be another two inches. Hope this helps and is clear. This is for my boyfriend who is about 5'10".

Q: Is this recommended for full weight bearing for an 80 yr old woman recovering from a broken hip and leg?

I purchased these safety rails for my 95-year old father-in-law after he suffered a broken hip. He is over six feet tall and weighs 180. It was money well spent.
