A superb book! Every public library should have a copy of it.
It is an audaciously ambitious book about a teenage boy who uses basketball to elevate himself and his teammates. As he grows older, he learns the core values of the team and ultimately learns how to lead one. A fantastic introspect and enigma of mind that takes great creative risks and against considerable odds makes most of them pay dividends. It begins and ends with a teenage boy's account of the pinnacle of confidence and how to get out of its cocoon using the basketball as a medium. For the book, Mustafa drew upon his own experiences with the likes of the rest of the team. Also playing key role in the book are his team mates, teachers, coaches and parents who inspired him and eventually embraced him for his universal values, integrity, excellence, transparency and ultimate team spirit. It is a book of "quantum leaps, of diverging timelines, alternate futures, and crucial moments when things could go either way. Yet, it sustains a narrative momentum as it unfolds as fact and fantasy, truth and dare, fears and assurances, fact and metaphysical transcendence. Along the way, it traces the thematic arc of courage in the wake of challenges, which has gone from being about the probable, the possible, the impossible, the metaphysical to the ordinary, the everyday. It seems the one form that can truly grasp the essential strangeness of modern living.A book that combines the set of enduring core values to form the bedrock of Mustafa's character for strength, courage and commitment to meet any challenge, in the years ahead.
