Wonderful, genre-defying musical excursion by a former (?) member of the duo known as Air. A Quintessentially European, cosmopolitan, mesmerizing musicaljourney. Hastrace elements of Air but definitely charts its own territory. Elegant and enchanting...... A sheer delight!!!

Nicolas Godin, originally a part of French futurist-pop duo Air, has released a unique and inventive debut solo album titled Contrepoint. Four years in the making, all eight songs draw inspiration from different works by German composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Using legendary Canadian pianist and fellow Bach fanatic Glenn Gould's renditions as a guide, Godin builds around classical themes with a blend of jazz, rock and electronica.The album opens with the hyper "Orca," flooding ears with a number of sounds from electric guitar to synth comparable to an 8-bit Japanese video game. Dorothée de Koon and Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars (under the pseudonym Gordon Tracks) provide guest vocals on "Widerstehe doch der Sünde." The lyrics are spliced from the original solo cantata Bach composed, backed by subtle beats.The pun-ultimate "Bach Off" offers the best example of the definition of rhythmic counterpoint. Clocking in at just over seven minutes, it features highlife sax influences combining with soothing harpsichord, some dramatic piano and weaving woodwind instrumentation.With plenty of special guests on board providing a wonderful genre amalgam, Contrepoint is a strong starting point for Nicolas Godin. It's definitely one of the best musical surprises of the year.4.5/5

Massive fan of Air but this offering from Monsieur Godin was well below par.

Disco eccezionale sotto tutti i punti d vista,,se amate gli AIR questo disco è comunque parte integrante della loro discografia,brani molto diversi tra loro ma con ottima presenza sonora e spazialità,se avete un buon impianto Hi-Fi lo farà fiorire,,,ottima registrazione...da non perdere!!

Malgré sa réputation internationale, je dois admettre que je ne connais pas très bien la musique du groupe Air, dont Nicolas Godin a été pendant 15 ans l'un des deux membres avec Jean-Benoît Dunckel. Ce n'est donc pas en fan convaincu et curieux que j'ai abordé ce disque.Non, c'est en découvrant le somptueux clip vidéo de Colin Solal Cardo réalisé pour la Blogothèque sur le morceau Back Off que j'ai été intrigué par l'album Contrepoint et son concept consistant à prendre comme point de départ 8 morceaux de Jean-Sébastien Bach pour les réinterpréter librement avec guitares, basses, bois, clavier et percussions.Le résultat est surprenant et admirable. Au fil des morceaux, cet album se fait rock progressif sur le long Bach Off qui à lui seul justifierait l'achat de cet album , électro-pop avec le germanique Widerstehe doch des Sünde, jazzy avec Club Nine qui est un clair hommage à Take Five de Dave Brubeck et sa signature rythmique impaire syncopée, voire bossa sur le morceau Clara.Au final cet album est un objet musical non identifiable, ambitieux et très réussi.

No es nada fácil atreverse sin ser del ambiente académico a tomar elementos y motivos de la obra de Bach y llevarlos un poco más allá. En un contexto "pop", pero que no cae en la facilidad consumible, el atrevido experimento del francés Godin da un soplo de elegancia y excelentísimo hacer a un disco que no desmerece nada a las raíces de las que bebe. La única pega es que a los amantes de Air les parecerá poco Air, a las s qe nos les gusta Air dirán que tiene ese Aire. Pero a pesar de algunas licencias y su equipo inconfundible toque un excelentísimo primer trabajo. Muy recomendable.

je ne connaissais pas Nicolas Godin, mais j'aime beaucoup sa musique
